Valley scribes feel heat of on-going agitation | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 20: In a conflict zone, journalists walk on the razor's edge to report death almost daily. In the unending quest for news, some times the news makers themselves become news. And when it happens, the colleagues hold meetings and the authorities order enquiries. . When men in uniform roughed up a videographer near police Control Room in the summer capital yesterday, it was the fourth such incident since January 7. After every incident, the authorities apologize and even order enquiries but the `show goes on'. Aman Farooq, who works for a local English daily, Greater Kashmir while covering the aftermath of the Lal Chowk encounter had a verbal dual with a senior police officer on January 7. Aman's colleague, Omar Ganie while narrating the incident said: "He (police officer) slapped our colleague Yawar on his face while we were performing professional duties. Finding the DSP totting the gun, Amaan found it worth a frame and at once caught the official in his camera. On this, the official got further annoyed and abused the media team. He ordered us to leave the spot without delay. We rushed down. But for Amaan, the worst had yet to come. In a few moments the DSP also rushed down and started following us. And after a few steps, he cocked his pistol and fired at Amaan. We were busy photographing the scene when suddenly we heard a gunshot and saw Amaan lying on the ground in a pool of blood. We asked the officer, 'Why did you shoot him?' and he said, 'No, I didn't' and ran away." The lens man sustained an injury in his thigh and was hospitalized. The government ordered an enquiry into the incident after journalists registered strong protest. The enquiry report has not been made public till date. Kashmiri journalists repeatedly urged the authorities to make the findings of the enquiry public. They have been demanding appropriate action against the erring police officer. The authorities, however, seem in no mood to bring the erring officer to justice. Last week, a group of lens men from different organizations received a sound thrashing at Tengpora where a case drowning triggered massive demonstrations. The lens men were rescued by the stone pelters who pelted stones forcing the CRPF men to seek shelter. Farooq Javed of Rising Kashmir and Tauseef of AFP were among the injured. Once again the scribes registered strong protest but nothing moved. Editor of an Urdu daily was on his way to the office on his scooter. He was intercepted by the police near Rajouri Kadal in down town, Srinagar. He showed them his curfew pass. "Keep it with you. When your taps run dry, use it as a toilet paper", he was told. Luckily, the editor escaped unhurt. Yesterday, a car hit a police bus near the Police Control Room. The driver died on the spot. Three others received critical injuries. The videographer of a private channel, who happened to be in the area tried to cover the event. However, as soon as he opened his camera, a group of uniformed men pounced on him and beat him to pulp.
