Students, passengers feel burden on pocket | Hike in passenger fare | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 19: Even though the state government is yet to issue a notification announcing a formal 13 per cent hike of all kinds of passenger fares in private transport buses and mini buses, the daily passenger is already feeling the pinch and burden of hiked fares on his pocket. On Sunday the state government took the decision to issue a formal notification hiking the passenger fares to the tune of 13 percent during a meeting specially convened to win over the support of the transporters lobby who had earlier issued a strike call for July 19. The student community and common passengers in general on Monday voiced their concern against the hike and blamed the state government for failing to come to the aid of the daily passengers and succumbing to the pressure of the transporters lobby. If transporters are feeling the burden of hiked petroleum prices the aam admi is also equally burdened and with this decision as the monthly income would be adversely affected, majority of commuters traveling in public transport buses told this correspondent during their journey. The majority of passengers were of the opinion that under the new policy the government is going to monitor the prices on regular basis and in case instead of hiking the prices if the government chooses to reduce the price, will the same transporters lobby pressurize the state government to cut down the passenger fare in order to transfer the benefit or would continue to earn fat profits at the expense of the aam admi. On the other hand large number of passengers also feared further rise in the rates of essential commodities including vegetables, pulses and other products as the transporters are going to transfer the burden of hiked fares to consumers in the coming times.
