Strike continues, Geelani hospitalised after chest pain | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, July 22 : A general shutdown and security restrictions continued in parts of Srinagar and other parts of the Valley today even as rains dampened the Hurriyat plans of holding sit-ins on the roads today. Curfew was today lifted from Baramulla and Sopore towns but restrictions continued on the movement of people in most parts of the Kashmir Valley. Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla, Bashir Ahmad Bhat held a meeting with local representatives and discussed various measures to restore law and order last evening. During the meeting locals had demanded the release of youth, who were detained during the recent protests in the two towns, official sources said. Bhat assured them that the issue will be seriously considered on a case-to-case basis after proper investigation. Baramulla and Sopore towns were brought under curfew yesterday after protests over the killing of a youth, Fayaz Ahmad Khanday, in police firing on Monday. A senior Police officer told Agence India Press that, curfew has been lifted from the two towns, restrictions continued in many places on the movement of people as a precautionary measure. Police and paramilitary forces were deployed in strength in Baramulla and Sopore this morning to strictly enforce prohibitory orders. Restrictions on the movement of the people also continued in most parts of old city especially in areas falling under police stations of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Maharajgunj, Safakadal, Zadibal and Lal Bazar. Prohibitory orders are also in force in Batmaloo, Maisuma and Parimpora in uptown Srinagar, police said. Despite the restrictions, protesters burned a government vehicle in main city at Zonimar on Thursday. According t o reports scores people took to streets in south Kashmir's Shopian after police picked up three youth for allegedly pelting stones during the ongoing protests. The protesters then marched towards curfew bound Kanipora. Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) chased them and fired tear smoke canisters to disperse the protesters. Curfew has been imposed in the area when reports last came in. Elsewhere life continued to remain paralyzed by a complete shutdown. Anticipating sit-ins and the protests on the call of Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, curfew-like restrictions were imposed in downtown area of the city by deploying hundreds of additional cops and paramilitary CRPF troopers this morning. Educational institutions, banks, post offices, shops and business establishments remained closed in the areas under restrictions in Srinagar city. Public transport went off the roads. Meanwhile, All Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman Sayed Ali Shah Geelani was hospitalised on Thursday after he complained of dizziness and weakness in his detention centre at Srinagar's Chesmashahi area. Sources told Agence India Press that Geelani has been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) on Thursday. His blood pressure was high and tri-glyceride level too has gone up. Geelani was arrested on June 20 under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA). He was arrested a few days before he had called for March to Hazratbal Shrine. Elsewhere, the state administration Thursday for the second time in the past two days held talks with the representatives of the Old Town in north Kashmir's Baramulla. Two youth from the Old Town were killed in police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) action, since past week. "Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla, Bashir Ahmad Bhat held a second round of talks with the colonies representatives of Old Town, Baramulla,"a statement issued here said. The meeting was also attended by Senior Superintendent Police, Baramulla. "The representatives demanded thorough probe in to the drowning of Faiazan Rafiq Buhroo for which an FIR No. 132 of 2010 has already been registered in the police station, Baramulla to investigate the case," the statement said. "The Deputy Development Commissioner assured the public representatives that evidence is being collected to ascertain the cause of death and the investigation shall be carried out fairly." The representatives also took up the issue of detained youth during the meeting. "Regarding the issue of detained youth hailing from old town Baramulla, the District Development Commissioner reiterated that the matter is being looked at and a lenient view shall be taken in this regard as far as possible." |
