Srinagar-Jammu Highway reopens for light vehicles | | | SRINAGAR: Light vehicles were allowed from both sides on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway which was closed due to landslides, triggered by heavy rains at Penthal. ''We have allowed light vehicles from Srinagar and Jammu on the highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country,'' a traffic police official said this afternoon. However, there is still one-day at Penthal because of threat of fresh landslides, he said, adding no heavy vehicle was however, allowed. He said the road was closed early this morning following landsldies and shooting stones at Penthal, the most troubled spot on the Highway. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the Highway, immediately pressed into service men and machine to clear the road. Meanwhile, hundreds of heavy vehicles, including trucks loaded with essential commodities for Kashmir valley and those carrying fruit from here, are stranded at different points on both sides of the Penthal.
