EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 22: On the pattern of National Safforn Mission the Jammu and Kashmir will soon have the National Basmati Mission. The indication in this regard was given by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during the District Development Board meeting of Jammu district held here on July 20.
The Chef Minister assured the members of Assembly segments representing the Basmati growing areas of Jammu in the meeting that Government will also constitute the National Basmati Mission for boosting the cultivation of Basmati in Jammu region.
The demand was raised by BJP MLA from RS Pura Prof Garu Ram and it was supported by the MLA from Bishnah, Ashwani Sharma, MLA Marh, Ch. Sukhnandan, MLA, Suchetgarh Ch. Sham and MP Jammu-Poonch Parliamentary Constituency, Madan Lal Sharma.
Raising the issue during the meeting Ch. Garu Ram highlighted the problems being faced by the Basmati growers of Jammu region. He said the world class Basmati of Jammu is on the verge of extinction with growers turning to other varieties of rice and pulses due to failure of Government to provide impetus to them. The MLA informed the meeting that many farmers in RS Pura belt which known for growing world class Basmati and reference to which was made by Prime Minster of India during a conference abroad also have now shifted to cultivation of other crops due to lack of support from Government.
The MLA said the Basmati growers of Jammu region are being fleeced by middlemen but till date the Government has not paid any attention in solving their problems.
He said if Government is really interested in boosting the world class basmati cultivation in Jammu it should pay immediate attention information of National Basmati Mission on the pattern of National Saffron Mission so that the growers are not cheated by Middle men and there monopoly ends.
The Chief Minister while justifying the demand assured the members that the Government will soon constitute National Basmati Mission. He issued on spot instructions to Agriculture authorities present in the meeting to frame a detailed project report in this regard.
Omar Abdullah also assured the meeting that he will peruse the case at national also.
It may be recalled that the Basmati growers of Jammu were demanding that the Government should take same steps for the boosting the Basmati cultivation in Jammu region as have been taken by it for the promotion of horticulture industry and Saffron cultivation in Kashmir Valley.
The Basmati growers of Jammu have alleged that due to lack of support from Government side and monopoly from mill owners and middlemen they are forced to turn to the cultivation of other crops to save themselves from huge losses suffered by them by cultivating Basmati. The growers were also demanding a minimum support price of Rs one thousand for per quintal Basmati. However with the announcement of Chief Minister their long pending demand will be solved.
