Autonomy demand is ultra-vires to 1975 accord | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 22: The National Conference has once again reiterated its demand for restoration of internal autonomy and termed it as the only `practicable' solution to the vexed problem. The decision was taken at an extra-ordinary meeting of the organization that lasted six hours. The NC has conveyed that the current status quo was not acceptable to it. Ever since NC returned to power in 1996, it has been talking about restoration of autonomy. A document has also been prepared. But a few questions remain unaddressed. NC claims to represent the entire state. But reports from Jammu and Ladakh narrate a different story. Jammu is not in favour of restoration of autonomy. In fact, Jammu people opposed it in times when Sher-e-Kashmir was the Prime Minister. They believed in One Pradhan and one vidhaan. They have vehemently opposing the state flag as well. They stand for greater integration with India. Similarly, the people of Ladakah have made their intentions clear time and again. They want Azadi from Kashmir. They have got the Autonomous Council and are happy with it. They too stand for total integration with India. The NC spokesman while addressing a press conference this evening said representatives from Jammu participated in the meeting. But do the participants represent the aspirations of Jammu region? And have the people of Jammu and Ladakh been consulted? National Conference was revived in 1975 following the Successful parleys between Mirza Muhammad Afzal Beg and Parthasarthy. According to Late Advocate GN Hagroo, Beg tried his best to get the maximum out of the parleys. His stand delayed the accord. One day, Sher-e-Kashmir forced entry into the room where parleys were going on and brought Beg out. Why are you delaying the accord? I mot not interested in your ifs and buts. Hurry up and finalize the deal. (As narrated by Advocate Hagroo, a few days before his death. The detailed interview was published in some Srinagar based newspapers) Hagroo had the distinction of being the acting president of Plebiscite Front when Beg was in jail. Sher-e-Kashmir did not want Beg to delay the accord, or to put it plainly transfer of power by raising issues like restoration of autonomy. And when Sher-e-Kashmir did not seek it, why and how can Omar Abdullah seek it. Seeking autonomy, for the information of the NC leadership, is ultra-vires to the 1975 accord. Why should New Delhi give autonomy to National Conference? In contemporary Kashmir, the separatists call the shots. If autonomy is given to Syed Ali Geelani, who runs the show, the problem will be solved once for all (if Geelani accepts it). And who needs autonomy any way? People of Jammu do not want it. Ladakhies do not want to have it and Kashmir has rejected it.
