7/24/2010 11:09:38 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 24: Farmers of Jammu province too have been discriminated by the successive governments in the State.
This was alleged by BJP former State President & Jammu East MLA Ashok Khajuria while addressing the inaugural session of new Working Committee's first 1-day meeting of BJP Kissan Morcha at Karan Palace, Nagbani.
Ashok Khajuria, who also lighted traditional lamp alongwith Morcha State President Karan Singh, Gen Secretary Capt (retired) Kasturi Lal Sharma, Akhnoor Distt President Suraj Padha, Treasurer Jagdish Pandey and other leaders formally inaugurated this meeting.
He said that right from the days of independence, the farmers of Jammu province have been subjected to discrimination.
Be it supply of seeds and fertilizers or educating the farmers about the latest agricultural techniques, the government has ignored them and concentrated on the welfare of the farmers and promotion of crops production in the valley only, he alleged.
Khajuria said that certain agricultural products like Anaardaana and Rajmash from Doda-Bhaderwah belt, which are world famous and in great demand, are given a step motherly treatment as far as their production, improvement in quality and marketing are concerned.
The state government which spends crores of rupees on agriculture department, has done nothing to improve the quality and quantity of these products and it has been concentrating only on the valley-based agro products.
Leader of BJP Legislators party & Jammu West MLA Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, who addressed the concluding session, said that it is only now that improving the lot of Basmati growing farmers of Jammu has been touched because for the first time BJP MLAs have been elected from the Basmati growing belt.
Again, it is only now after 63 years that the CM was constrained to announce the constitution of National Basmati Commission on the persistent demands of our MLAs.
Elaborating, he divulged that till recently unhusked Basmati could not be exported from the state, thereby had created a monopoly and stranglehold on the entire production through mill owners.
No measures had been taken by the State government to ensure remurative and economically viable prices for the farmers of Jammu. The position with regard to the timely availability of fertilizers and seeds in Jammu region is no different.
On the contrary, buffer stocks of agricultural imputs is maintained in the valley for the local farmers.
He assured the delegates that the party will continue to raise their voice inside and outside the assembly.
Kissan Morcha State President Karan Singh focussed on strengthening the organizational structure as well as the constitution of Morcha units at the gross roots level in rural areas so that the problems of these areas and its population are highlighted and ensure remedy for the same.
He declared that the Kissan Morcha will be organizing camps in different areas to educate the farmers of the modern and scientific methods of agriculture so that the farmers get more return of their crops.
