Ministers visit accident spot, instruct completion of repair work
7/24/2010 11:19:51 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 24 : More than 24 hours after the tragic accident took away lives of at least 25 bus passengers in Kishtwar district none of the close relative or the next kith and kin of the deceased heard any thing concrete or substantive from the mouth of visiting minister and political advisor who today visited the spot and heard grievances of local residents. No amount of compensation was also announced on the spot by the state ministers. Besides giving strict instructions and setting a deadline for the repair of the road, which is already in bad condition the cabinet minister could not do much except for earning peoples ire who were furious over the efforts made by the state government to build a smooth road in the hilly district.
"Every time a road accident takes place we hear official statements and fresh deadlines are set to repair the roads and check licences of erring drivers but after few days every thing is lost in din and we meet again at another place when a new accident takes place", angry residents said in Kishtwar lambasting tall claims made by the govt to streamline the traffic department and check the menace of overloading.
Ready to take the partial blame for promoting overloading the residents alleged that in the absence of adequate number of buses plying on the route they are left with no choice but to endanger their precious lives while jostling for space inside the overcrowded bus. Referring to the frequent incidents of road accidents involving old buses and rickety fleet the local residents alleged that what transport department is doing in the state when it is visible to a naked eye that the condition of the buses was not good enough and road worthy. Secondly, when traffic police cops are deployed on the vulnerable locations how they allow overcrowded buses to cross further and do not book challans to discipline them at random. The condition of the road and training of drivers is another factor which is adding to the crisis and no one in the state has any check on the increasing number of accidents, the local residents alleged
