Tarigami also wants New Delhi to pursue Kashmir-centric policy, Congress mum

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 27: As if all this was not enough to queer the Indian pitch in Kashmir, another Kashmiri leader, who is constitutionally bound to defend the Indian Constitution, protect the unity and integrity of India, rein in and book all rebels and tell the people of Kashmir that Jammu and Kashmir is a settled issue, told his audience at Kangan, Kashmir, on Monday that he is the only executive head of the state who told the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson on their face last year that the problem confronting the state is not economic but political and New Delhi has to resolve this problem if it wants to forge a lasting peace in Kashmir. "I am the only Chief Minister who categorically made it clear at Qazigund in front of the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson on the occasion of inauguration of train service that Kashmir is not an economic issue but a political one and needs addressing politically. I have reiterated the same time and again at various national forums, including National Development Council (NDC) meeting recently", he, in fact, told his audience at Kangan.
What Tarigami told the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson and what the executive head of the state told the gathering at Kangan and in front of the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson could not be described as off-the-cuff remarks, suggestions and demands. What they and other Kashmiri leaders have been saying is well-calculated and it is designed to convince the Kashmiri separatists of all hues that those part of the establishment are with them and that they are contributing to the movement in their own way. It can be said that the role of the "mainstream" Kashmiri leaders in keeping the pot boiling in Kashmir is far more disturbing. They are part of the establishment and they are wrecking the institution of the state from within by treading the path charted by the Kashmiri secessionists and fundamentalists.
The situation as it exists today in Kashmir is indeed alarming and frightening and the manner in which those who are part of the establishment are spoiling the Indian pitch in the Valley should have awakened the authorities in New Delhi. It should have made them sit up and discuss and decide whether the policy now openly declared by those termed as part of the establishment is conducive to the maintenance of the Indian unity and integrity. But the authorities in New Delhi have thought it prudent to keep sleeping and allow the likes of Tarigami to continue with their mission of vitiating the atmosphere in Kashmir and helping directly the cause of the separatists. How else should one interpret the manner in Kashmiri leaders such as Tarigami are indulging in hate-India and break-India campaign by publicly airing views no state worth its name will ever tolerate?
One can understand the reasons behind the New Delhi's failure to stem the rot in Kashmir and ask those at the helm in Kashmir to behave and not say anything that directly or indirectly promotes the cause of the separatists or that gives legitimacy to the cult of gun and stone throwing. But one fails to understand why the Jammu-based Congress leaders and Ministers are maintaining silence. They should have by now severed their relations with those virtually supporting secessionists and come out of the government to identify themselves with their constituencies and the sentiments of the people they represent knowing it full well that their silence would cost them very dearly.
That they, like their masters in New Delhi, have thought it appropriate to watch the hate and break-India campaign as a mute spectator is a matter of grave concern. In fact, their silence is being construed here in Jammu and other nationalist camps as a complicity in what has been going on in the Valley for months. This is not good for the Congress party. Nor is it good for the people of the state as a whole. The Jammu-based Congress leaders and ministers are playing with their own long-term interests by becoming uncritical supporters of the state government that is seeking to undo all that the Indian nation, including the Indian Army, did in Kashmir during all these years of independence to preserve the Indian sovereignty in Kashmir.
It is never too late. The Jammu-based Congress leaders and ministers must do some introspection and refashion their whole approach towards the government, which is headed by someone who doesn't regard Jammu and Kashmir as a settled issue. Not to do so or to continue to play the role of a second fiddle would be only to mar their interests as well as jeopardize the legitimate interests of the country. They should and they must tell the head of the government and the likes of Tarigami others to stop saying what they have been saying about Jammu and Kashmir. They must tell them that there is no place whatsoever in the Indian scheme of things for communalism and secessionism. (Concluded)
