| Dozen kids fainted, 3 hospitalized, 1 serious | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
RAJOURI, July 27: At least a dozen minor kids fainted following vaccination in Sub District Hospital Mendhar in Poonch district. Three among them have been hospitalized while a serious baby has been referred for intensive care.
As per reports, Vaccination unit of Sub District Hospital Mendhar was today opened for vaccination where various kids were vaccinated for DPT. However as per reports a dozen kids fainted after receiving the injection. Three of them namely Usman Arshad son of Arshad Hussain resident of Naka Majeri, Sheeraz Shafayat son of Mohammad Shafayat resident of Naka Majeri and Rahila Anjum daughter of Aalamgir resident of Gursai village were hospitalized in the Sub District Hospital Mendher. Sources said that when the condition of Rahila Anjum turned grim, she was referred for intensive treatment at District Hospital Rajouri.
Though the parents have alleged that the medicine in the vaccine was outdated, doctors refuted the allegation saying that there was some reaction and the situation has been controlled by them. "This was an outdated medicine given to our kids in this hospital and I think these might be expired medicines", parents said. However, when contacted Block Medical Officer Mendher Dr Zafrullah Choudhary said that there was some reaction and they have controlled it. He admitted that three child were admitted in the hospital. However, he said that the condition of all the children is normal. He said that the medicine is manufactured in 2009 and it will expire in 2011. He said dates are mentioned clearly on the medicine pack.
Meanwhile Sub-Divisional Magistrate Mendher also visited the Hospital to take stock of the situation.
