4 detained protestors released, bovine smugglers booked | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 27: In a bid to pacify Samba people's anger and anguish over the alleged police-bovine smuggler nexus, police finally lodged FIR against four accused while also released four protesters today. It was again a tense day in Samba as the locals started to assemble on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway to lodge fresh rounds of protests against the alleged attempts of police to shield the smugglers. Samba town observed a complete bandh as all shops and educational institutions of the area remained shut. Shouting slogans against police administration, the protesting people once again blocked the highway for about an hour demanding registration of case against the absconding smugglers and release of four protesters arrested yesterday. They also demanded compensation for the losses to the property in the violent clashes between police and protesters yesterday. The protesting people alleged that police deliberately attacked and damaged the business establishments which led to heavy losses to the local businessmen. Due to the blockage of highway, the traffic on ever busy highway remained disrupted for second consecutive day. Heavy posse of police contingent, however, removed the blockade by resorting to mild lathicharge and tear gas shelling. A group of protestors went to police station Samba and demanded release of the detained protestors which were later released on the direction of newly posted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Samba, JL Sharma. When contacted SSP JL Sharma said that in order to pacify the people, a team comprised of DC Samba Sourabh Bhagat and Tehsildhar Settlement Ravinder Sharma listened them and assured compensation for the losses. He further said that meeting with the prominent people of the area was in progress so that situation could be tackled with dexterity. Meanwhile, SHO Samba, Yashveer Slathia told Early Times, "A case under section 380/457 RPC against FIR 157/2010 has been registered. Mukhtiyar, the nabbed bovine smuggler is not in a position to respond police questioning and when ever we get his fitness certificate from doctors the other three absconders will be arrested on his disclosure". However, police public meetings were in progress till late hours to defuse the tension, sources said.
