Champion of Hindu-Muslim amity passes away | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 27: World famous apple town was virtually captured by militants in early 90s. Security persons would call it Jaffna. Then the militants did what they should not have done. Sopore was captured by the army and militants were either killed or flushed out. The people of Sopore believe that the militants paid the price for taking cudgels with Ahad Bab (Peer Abdul Ahad). A grenade was thrown at the saint. Ahad Bab survived miraculously but cursed the militants. This incident marked the beginning of the end of militancy in Sopore. Today Ahad Bab is no more. He passed away at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Monday night. According to reports, around one lakh people attended his funeral. Amid sighs and tears he was lowered in his grave this afternoon. An era ended. A champion of Hindu-Muslim amity left his followers wailing. Ahad Bab, hated clothes. He would roam naked on Sopore streets. This particular trait evoked severe criticism from some quarters. A renowned scholar while commenting on this said Ahad Bab has shed clothes in protest against growing waywardness, promiscuity, deceit and dishonesty. In winter when everything freezes in the valley, Ahad Bab refused to cover himself. The chill did not affect his nerves. His darbaar recognized no boundaries. Hindus and Muslims, army men and bureaucrats, men and women, politicians and business men would rush to Ahad Bab's place to seek solace. He offered it to all. The popularity of the departed saint could be gauged from the fact that a rumor attributed to him created a stir in the Valley two years ago. Some miscreants quoting Ahad Bab urged the people to deposit rice in the local mosques. People came out in large numbers with bags of rice and deposited the same in the mosques. Tons of rice was collected across Kashmir. Nobody knew what to do with it. The process stopped when Ahad Bab's relatives made the necessary clarification. The rice was then distributed among the needy. The departed saint's followers refuse to accept his death. "Nobody will see Bab now but we have firm belief that he will be there all the time to guide us", said Abdul Gani, a devotee.
