Jammu based ministers ignoring Jammuites: BJP | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 28: Criticizing the coalition government headed by Omar Abdullah for adopting different yardsticks and double standards towards Kashmir and Jammu, BJP today blamed Jammu-based ministers in the coalition for ignoring the concerns of the people of Jammu. Reacting sharply to yesterday’s Cabinet decision to appoint an Inquiry Commission to look into recent disturbances in Kashmir valley leading to deaths of 17 people and giving compensation to the next of the kin of these persons to the tune of rupees five lakh each, three MLAs of BJP including Ashok Khajuria, Jugal Kishore Sharma and Sukhnandan Choudhary in a joint press conference said that this decision of the government was just to please the agitating masses in Kashmir with a view to regain the lost control by it. But this decision also points towards double standards adopted by the government of one or the other region as the government did not announce any probe into 2008 killings by police of 12 people in Jammu during land row agitation. Even the government did not announce any substantial compensation to their families then. Referring to incident of disappearance of two minor girls in police custody in Gulabgarh area of Kishtwar district in Jammu division, the MLAs said that government did not constitute any inquiry against the erring police officials despite agitation by the locals of the area. In a similar situation in Shopian area of Kashmir valley, the government constituted several inquiries and took serious action against the officials there. This is also another case of glaring discrimination of the government as regards the matters pertaining to Jammu. Charging the ministers, hailing from Jammu, in the coalition for maintaining reticence during Cabinet meeting and allowed taking unfair decision, the BJP legislators said that they do not command any writ in the government. These ministers, to remain in power, act as yes-men of Kashmir-centric leaders, they said adding “they are like “Jai Chands” for the people of Jammu. The MLAs also referred to the recent incident in Samba, where shops and property of many people got damaged during police lathicharge and bursting tear gas shells on protests demanding action against nexus of cattle lifters and police officials. No compensation has been provided to such people by the government except that one senior police officer was shifted. This double standard adopted by the government towards the people of Jammu is highly condemnable and BJP warns the government to shun this policy in the interests of the state and the nation, they said. Asking the government to disband this inquiry Commission headed by the Chairman of State Human Rights Commission, they asked the government to act in a way that government was fair and impartial in handling matters of all regions and sub-regions in this sensitive state. “No act of the government should convey message to the people of the state and nation that it was acting in a discriminatory manner”, they added. The MLAs also said that the party would fight tooth and nail against all such decisions which has discriminatory character towards regions in the state and aimed at appeasing the separatists and anti-national elements.
