Janipur reeling under acute water scarcity | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 28: THE recent floods in River Tawi not only played havoc with the low lying areas along the winter capital but also exposed the preparedness of various government departments. As a result of the flash floods, water supply to many areas in Janipur remained affected and people in many such areas are forced to live under acute water shortage for last many days. In this season of continuous incessant rains and humidity, locals are forced to use rain water for their day to day purposes. There are thousands of such households reeling under the acute shortage of potable water as PHE is not supplying even water tankers, leaving the residents high and dry. One of the residents of Janipur, Poonam Sharma said that in these days of intense humidity, when there is more need of water, PHE department instead of providing water to them has left them on the mercy of God. She also said that there was no proper timing of water tankers being provided by the department. Another resident Vikas Sharma said ``on one hand, we are facing acute shortage of water and there are many houses in the area who have high links in the department get water supply throughout the day’’. Locals maintained that despite the claims of state government to provide proper water supply facility to every nook and corner of the state but the PHE department is not coming up to the expectations. When contacted Chief Engineer PHE, Daleep Bakshi for his comments, he said that due to heavy rainfall and flash floods in Tawi, water supply in some areas was affected. To provide respite to the locals, the department is supplying water through water tankers as restoration of supply through pipelines would take some time. He also said repairs of the affected supply lines were going on war footing.
