Cong High command disappoints Omar’s detractors | Himalayan Features | | Ashwani EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 28: Fully backing the Omar Abdullah led collation Government in J&K the Congress High Command has asked its Partymen in J&K to strengthen the Chief Minister’s hands in the state. This attitude of the Party has dashed the hopes of Mr Abudullah’s detractors to the ground who wanted his immediate replacement. According to insiders in the Party the UPA Chairperson and Congress chief Mrs Sonia Gandhi has rejected any suggestion regarding replacement of Mr Abdullah by a new incumbent. She has also turned down all the suggestions from the angry Congress men in the state who were of the view that coalition with PDP led by Mufti Mohammed Sayed was more in the interests of the people of the state than NC. Gandhi according to Party sources instead of obliging the detractors of Mr Abdullah in the Party has asked them to go and strengthen the NC-Congress coalition in the state as it was in the overall interests of the people of all three regions. The sources said even Mrs Gandhi has not agreed to the views of a section of Congressmen regarding appointment of Union New and Renewable Energy Minister and NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah as the Chief Minister in the sensitive and trouble-torn J&K in place of his son. These Congmen were of that view that senior Abdullah being an experience politician and having contacts with common masses in all the three regions of the State could be a better possibility than Mr Omar Abdullah in silencing the separatists and taking on defiant PDP. But this suggestion was also out rightly rejected by Mrs Gandhi who plainly said that no arguments will be accepted. Mrs Gandhi according to highplaced sources in the Party while rejecting the contentions of the detractors of Mr Abdullah had in plain terms made it clear to these Congmen from the state that despite allocation of huge funds during previous coalition Government led by Mufti Mohammed Sayed and Ghulam Nabai Azad respectively, the Congress has failed to retain those seats in 2008 Assembly poll which were won by it in 2002 Assembly elections. Though the Party was supposed to increase its seat share in the state which it ruled in coalition for six years, Mrs Gandhi is said to have informed them. The sources said likewise the Party High Command has not given any ear to the suggestions of some Delhi based Congress leaders from state who had close proximity wiith Nehru -Gandhi family and were the well wishers of Mufti Mohammed Sayed wanted the PDP leader be installed as Chief Minister of the State with Congress support. These leaders in support of their arguments had told the Party High Command that in view of the deteriorating situation in the State the Party should snap its ties with NC and joint hands with PDP as militant violence was contained to a great extent during his tenure as Chief Minister of the state. The sources said this group of Congmen were also of the view that the PDP leader being an experienced politician can tackle the situation in a better way than Mr Abdullah who in a novice to politics. However Mrs Gandhi also silenced them all saying no change of guard was required in the state and coalition will run its full term, the sources added.
