Govt Physiotherapy College on verge of closure | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 29: Despite the tall claims of the state government to provide quality education to the medical students, the Government Physiotherapy College is almost on the verge of closure. The first batch of five years physiotherapy course in Government Physiotherapy College housed in Government Medical College (GMC) started in November 2006 and in 2007, another batch was started but after that no batch was enrolled. At present about 53 students are under going the course in the college. Students on the condition of anonymity stated that the GMC authorities had shown their helplessness in further enrolling another batch of students in the college due to lack of requisite facilities. However, the students of both the batches decry their decision to join this course in government college. They have to take theory and practical classes in private Physiotherapy College at Nardni Raipur in the outskirts of Jammu. Students rue that if th eprivate college can run the course successfully with all the required facilities and staff, why not government college then. Students further said that many students cannot afford the private course. They said there was no proper staff for teaching physiotherapy and there were no proper laboratory and library facilities. It is pertinent to mention here that there were two colleges of physiotherapy in the state, and now that government has decided to close its institute and only private college is enrolling the students in the course. Admission to these courses is held thorough entrance examination conducted by Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) and this course have high demand as far as stream of medical sciences is concerned. Sources stated that given the rampant privatization in every sphere of education, this is yet another example of government not owning its responsibility and give its nod for promotion of private colleges. Acting Principal of GMC Dr Aniece Choudhary cited his ignorance in the case and said that he could say anything only after going through all records. Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma could not be contacted even after repeated attempts.
