Bakerwals facing govt apathy
7/29/2010 11:14:28 PM

Early Times Report
Rajouri, July 29: The nomad Bakerwals had suffered heavy losses in the recent rainfall during their annual movement from Rajouri-Poonch areas to highland pastures of Valley and government has allegedly neither estimated the losses nor any relief has been extended to them.
As per rough estimate, atleast 2000 animals died in the recent rainfall in Pir-Panjal region during movement of Bakerwals to Valley. However, sources said that government has not provided any relief to the people who have lost their only livelihood.
Following apathetic attitude of government towards this backward community, Bakerwal Association has decided to launch agitation against the authorities. The Association General Secretary Mohammad Rafiq Bajaar told that their community has been ignored by the government in providing relief. He said that more than 2000 animals were died while many animals have turned sick due to heavy rainfall during their annual movement to Valley. “We have suffered a great loss from Baflias to Shopian due to recent unpredicted rainfall in the month of March this year”, he said, adding, though government had assured proper survey and relief to the community no such relief has been given till date. “Even we came to know that the department has not conducted any survey”, he said.
Saying that livestock and cattle are the livelihood of Bakerwals and as maximum of people have suffered total loss, they are at the verge of starvation. “We are not demanding air-conditioned quarters, we are nomads and want only relief of our loss so that our people can once again streamline their process of earning bread and butter”, he added.
Meanwhile, Bakerwal leader has said that they have decided to hold protest demonstration in Rajouri and Poonch against the government if the relief is not sanctioned within week.
Bakerwal leader has also targeted government for non-availability of any sheds in the area. Mohammad Rafiq Bajaar said ``if there would have been sheds en-route Valley, the community might not have suffered huge loss in recent rainfall’’. He said the government should still wake up from deep slumber and construct sheds for Bakerwals.
Bakerwals have also expressed their resentment over the dilly delaying attitude of animal husbandry department and demanded mobile animal husbandry units with the Bakerwal camps. “No animal husbandry officials used to visit their camps in Valley which resulted in increasing number of death rate of the animals in the highland pastures”, Bajaar said demanding mobile AH units attached with the camps.
