Govt failed to implement Nitish sen,Justice Mukherjee committee reports | Himalayan features | | By Ashwani
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 29: With the failure of State Government to implement the Nitish Sen Gupta and Justice Mukherjee Committee recommendations on smooth conduct of Amarnath pilgrimage, the stranded yatris enroute to cave shrine have been put to many hardships. Over 30,000 pilgrims are stranded at different places from Lakhanpur inJammu region to holy cave in Kashmir Valley since the Yatra has been suspended on July27 due to heavy rains and slippery tracks. This is for the second time during the ongoing holy Amarnath Yatra which started on June 30 that the Yatra has been suspended due to heavy rains to holy cave. Earlier the Yatra was also suspended on July 22 and 23 due to heavy down pour from Pahalgam and Baltal to holy cave that rendered the tracks on unsafe for movement of Yatra. The failure of authorities to implement the Justice Mukherjee and Nitish Sen Gupta Committee recommendations has compounded the problems of these stranded yatris enroute. The two committeees were constituted in 1996 after the heavy rains and snowfall lashed the entire Lidder Valley housing the holy cave resulting in many casualties as a large number of pilgrims were trapped in heavy snow fall during that year. To improve the facilities for the pilgrims the Government on the pursuance of some Hindu organizations associated with the annual Yatra constituted the Committee to find out the causes of the tragedy and suggest remedies. The two committees besides limiting the number of pilgrims that can be allowed during a single day for the Darshan also made some suggestions regarding the widening of the track to holy cave on both sides of Baltal and Chandanwari with erecting of steel barricades on the track as well as the National Highway for the safety of the pilgrims. The two Committees also had recommended constructions of Sarais on national highway for the halt age of the stranded pilgrims. But these recommendations have not seen the light of the day, said the office bearers of Buda Amarnath and Baba Amarnath Yatri Niyas which is looking after the yatra arrangements. The Government till date has failed to construction of Sarrais on National Highway, the both the Committees in their report had given main stress to it. With out the proper shelter places on National highway the stranded yatris are forced to sit in the vehicles or on open road side in the rough weather conditions also, said another office bearer of the Niyas. The hundreds of stranded yatris on National Highway have alsoamde such complaints and blamed the authorities for not making advance announcements regarding the suspension of Yatra from Jammu to holy Cave. These yatris allege that had the authroites Informed in advance about the suspension they would not have riskedto visit here .Moreover the authorities have allowed the pilgrimage from lakhanpur and no one stopped the pilgrims at jammu also.,”But after reaching at a secluded place ahead of nagrota they are not allowing us to move further. This is totally unfortunateThyere is no shelter for us .Wherewillhundreds of pilgrims go from here ”.said RAMAN Kumar ayatri from Gujarat. He alleged that some yatris have run short of money also.
