Will Nazki succeed in revamping Information Department ? | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, July 29:Will Farooq Nazki,ho has taken over as media consultant,be able to remove the three-year old mess in the Department of Information in Jammu and Kashmir ?This question has assumed interest not only among those who are directly and indirectly connected with the print and electronic media but among the members of the ruling coalition, especially the ministerial colleagues of Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah. Well if the experience and qualification of Farooq Nazki alone can be the instrument he can succeed in revamping the Department of Information. His long experience as Director Information Department, media advisor,Director Doordarshan should help him in bringing the Deparrtment out of the mess. However, since the malady, that has been plaguing the Department,is quite severe Nazki needs full powers and support from the Government for toning up the working of the prestigious department. Nazki needs to be told that those who headed the Department, between 2005 and 2009,were simply able to generate a situation of conflict between the media and the Government. Not only this they tried to divide the journalists working for the print and the electronic media. They lacked the basic culture of promoting cordial ties with the men of the fourth estate because they had no knowledge about PR work. Most important has been the reports indicating that the release of Government advertisements were utilised for influencing the editorial policies of the state based newspapers.Equally surprising has been the way that those newspapers which have wider circulation had been discriminated against by limiting the release of advertisements and full advertisement backing was given to those newspapers which published the Department press releases on their page one. One handicap for Nazki. The Dpartment of Information is manned by those who have neither the talent nor the experience for dealing with newsmen and for ensuring that Government activities received adequate coverage. Here Nazki is supposed to play a full-time job of giving training to the people who man the Information Department. In case Nazki sits in his chambers in the civil secretariat and simply spends time in interacting with the Chief Minister and his ministerial colleagues he may not be able to revitalise the Department of Information. He needs to spend time in interacting with newsmen and editors of state based newspapers in order to find out their problems and requirements. He needs to fan out to Delhi and Jammu for regular interaction with newsmen and editors. As media advisor he should first of all streamline the Department's advertisement policy so that it is linked with the circulation of each newspaper.Nazki's role at this juncture is not as simple and safe as it was in early 90's when he headed the Department. His assets are his close rapport with the National Conference President and Union Minister for new and renewable energy,Dr Farooq Abdullah, who represents one segment of the ruling establishment and one adviser to the Chief Minister, who represents another segment of the ruling elites. This way Nazki can manage to have his say in the reformation of the Information Department. He is,indeed,a noted literary figure belonging to a family of learned people. His father,Ghulam Rasool Nazki, has left an indelible mark as a poet and as a writer. If Farooq Nazki has learnt the tricks of PR work he must have imbibed it from his illustrious father who held a senior post in Radio Kashmir. One does believe that Nazki's responsibility of projecting Omar Abdullah's image in soothing colours may not be affected by his nephew Naeem Akhtar who is working as the PDP spokesman. One expects Nazki to function as a good PR man and not as a poet of repute. If he faced any difficulty he may take some tips from K.B.Jandial,who even after his retirement,is remembered by newsmen and editors of the state based newspapers for his conribution in making the Department as key to building the image of the Government(eom)
