BJP, SAYSS dealing with issue of national import in terms of money | | | STARK REALITY RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 29: The BJP and the RSS-controlled Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti (SAYSS) have, it seems, gone totally bankrupt. At a time when the need and exigency of the time was their active intervention to corner and censure the state government for its controversial move to institute a commission of inquiry to look into the circumstances culminating into the killing of 17 stone-pelting Kashmiri youth, the BJP and the SAYSS have thought to prudent to overlook this issue of national import and accuse the state government of dealing differently with the families of the slain Kashmiri disturbers of peace and separatists and the families of those martyrs who martyred themselves for the Holy Shri Amarnath cause in 2008. Both the BJP and the SAYSS have, it needs to be emphasized, instead of educating public opinion about the ramifications of the official decision to constitute a commission of inquiry, including the negative impact on the Army and the paramilitary forces engaged in anti-insurgency operations as per the orders of the state’s civil administration, asked the state government to deal the martyrs of Jammu and separatists and unruly elements in Kashmir at par as far as the rehabilitation or the money part is concerned. This could be construed as a height of irresponsibility on their part, as also a manifestation of their muddled thinking about the issues confronting the State of Jammu and Kashmir and the Indian nation as a whole. To raise the issue of compensation at a time when the concerted moves are afoot to demoralize, harass, humiliate and lower the morale of the Army and the paramilitary forces, including the CRPF was only to convey an impression that the BJP and the SAYSS weigh things in terms of money and not in terms of paramount national interest. Such an approach on the part of these two outfits was totally unwarranted and uncalled gor. By raising the issue of compensation and asking the authorities to treat the Jammu martyrs and the slain militants on a par the BJP and SAYSS have only lowered their position in the eyes of the people of Jammu province as well as all those who want the authorities in New Delhi to take on and crush the secessionists, communalists and stone-pelting force. The BJP did vaguely demand on Wednesday the disbanding of the newly constituted commission of inquiry, but its emphasis was primarily on the issue of discrimination, of course, an important issue. It and the SAYSS, which always work in unison, should have first admitted their failure saying they utterly failed to make the authorities to implement the August 31, 2008 Shri Amarnath Land Agreement in its entirety during the past nearly two years and then spoken on the issue. That the SAYSS and the BJP remained virtually silent during all these months of the historic and landmark agreement between the SAYSS and the state government only speaks ill of these two formations, which say time and again that they represent the Jammu sentiment and the national sentiment and that their leaders and cadres could make any sacrifice to defeat the evil, communal, undemocratic and separatist forces. It must remain a matter of shame that the SAYSS has taken so many months to make up its mind and demand implementation of the 2008 land agreement. Paradoxically, former convener of the SAYSS, who contested the last Lok Sabha election and lost miserably and remain in hibernation for a very long period, too, has sought to register his presence. He, like the BJP and the SAYSS leadership, has also criticized the Jammu-based Congress ministers and threatened the government of dire consequences in case the authorities fail to treat the martyrs of Jammu and the slain militants and their supporters at par. Emphasis remain on the same issue. Their grouse against the Congress may be well-founded and it is well-founded by yardstick because they have not discharged their obligations towards their Jammu constituency, but the BJP and the SAYSS, plus the former convener of the SAYSS, have forfeited their moral right to speak on behalf of the people of Jammu province in general and the non-Muslim minorities in the state in particular by indulging in the politics of deceit, emotional blackmail and rhetoric. If the BJP and the SAYSS really wish to serve the genuine cause of the people of Jammu province and the national cause, they have no other alternative but to make their stand on the commission of inquiry, the Army and the paramilitary forces clear. Do they want money or do they want a regime that respects and protects the Army and the paramilitary forces and that gives a freehand to them to deal with the situation they deem fit? They must do so right now because the time is running very fast. Similarly, the Jammu-based Congress ministers and leaders have to assert and use their authority to thwart the evil designs of the undesirable forces in Kashmir.
