Chidambaram for resumption of quiet dialogue in J&K | | | Early Times Report New Delhi, July 30: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has admitted that after recent protests normalcy is yet to return in Jammu and Kashmir. He expressed the hope that the State Government is able to control the situation.
Speaking to reporters here today regarding the developments through this month, the Home Minister said, “The situation in Jammu and Kashmir is not yet normal. Repeated calls for bandh have paralysed normal life in the valley. Security forces continue to operate in a difficult situation exercising maximum restraint. Government of J&K has announced some measures and I hope that these measures will help in normalising the situation.”
Violence continued in Srinagar warranting imposition of curfew during the day even as Chidambaram made these comments at his month-end briefing to reporters. He, however, reiterated his offer for quiet talks while admitting that there has been interruption in this. He said, “I have no reservations in talking to our own people,” indicating New Delhi’s endorsement of J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s efforts to open dialogue with the locals and their leaders irrespective of their political affiliations.
