CBI judge acquits Fazil | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 30: Prominent broadcaster, Zeeshan Fazil was acquitted by special CBI judge at New Delhi yesterday. He along with other Kashmiri artists were facing charges of favouring the artists with excessive payment. Fazil had produced and directed the seven-episode musical series ‘Sham-e-Kashmir’ for Doordarshan’s Central production Centre (CPC) in January 1999. Accusing Fazil and some other Doordarshan officials including then Director CPC, R P Mathur of favouring Kashmiri artists with excess payment, a case was filed against them in December 2000. Subsequently, Fazil and some Kashmiri artists and singers were charge-sheeted by CBI on July 28, 2003. However, yesterday Special Judge CBI, Patiala House, O P Saini acquitted Fazil, Deputy Director Doordarshan, New Delhi and Kashmiri artists including Waheed Jeelani, Meiraj-ud-din, Shagufta Shamas and Arif-ud-din in the case. The programme series ‘Sham-e-Kashmir’, made at a cost of Rs 8.90 lakhs that included boarding, lodging, food and transport charges for 127 Kashmiri artists that comprised 22 musical and entertainment parties including singers and traditional dancers. The series was as part of celebration of India’s 50th year of independence, and was recorded on January 15-16, 1999 for telecast on Jan 26 same year. Fazil was the producer and director of the programme and assisted the director CPC at that time. The then Director CPC, R P Mathur was also booked as accused No 1 in the case but he was dropped when CBI filed the charge-sheet for unknown reasons. Pertinent to mention Mathur had given financial approval for this series.
