Bijbehara youth fulfil CM’s wish, torch his effigy

Early Times Report
Jammu, July 30: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah’s wish was fulfilled Friday when angry youth torched his effigy on the Srinagar-Jammu highway at Bijbehara in South Kashmir. Last week a seemingly confident Omar in a desperate bid to make his point said nobody had torched his effigy in Kashmir till date.

A few days ago when Hizbul Mujahideen chief, Salah-ud-Din issued a statement from Pakistan administered Kashmir criticizing prolonged strikes, some masked youth torched his effigy in old town in the summer capital. “Who is he? How can he criticize us? We are not affiliated to any political organization. This is our movement and we know what to do”, they made clear.

Incidentally this was the first time since inception of militancy that the effigy of a militant commander was torched anywhere in Kashmir. The heat of the flames that engulfed the effigy was felt across the LoC in Pakistan administered Kashmir as well. A spokesman of the Hizbul Mujahideen issued a clarification next day. He stated Salah-ud-Din had not criticized the on-going strikes. “He had urged the leadership to keep peoples’ problems in mind while giving programmes”, he said.

The bold statement from the masked youth evoked a reaction from the Chief Minister. While criticizing the separatists for paralyzing life in Kashmir, Omar posed a question, most probably to the people of Kashmir. “Why don’t people torch my effigy?”

The Chief Minister perhaps wanted to convey that unlike Salah-ud-Din, people love him and do not express their anger by torching his effigy. But today the Bijbehara youth fulfilled his wish. They expressed their `love’ for the Chief Minister by torching his effigy on the most important road in the Valley.

According to a local news agency, the youth danced as the effigy went up into flames. They also raised slogans against the Omar led government. The angry youth also held him responsible for all the recent deaths in Kashmir.

Omar believes people of Kashmir love him. Apparently there seems no reason to disbelieve him. People in love have to go for Agni Pariksha at times!
