Jammu, July 30:
The Jammu and Kashmir is emerging as a key contributor to the hydro power generation in the country.
With some hydro power projects nearing completion in the state, NHPC plans to augument hydro electricity generating capacity to over 10,000 MW by the end of the current XIth Five Year Plan (2007-12) in the country.
NHPC is the country's largest hydro producing company with an installed capacity of 5,295 MW after the commissioning of its 120 ME Sewa-II project in the state last week. "It now plans to augment this capacity to over 10,000 MW by the end of the current XIth Five Year Plan (2007-12)," official sources
said.
The company is also in the process of forming a joint venture with state-utility PTC India for developing 2,100-MW capacity in the Chenab river basin and 1,000-mw in Pakal Dul. Sources said NHPC was doing well and its net profit had risen seven per cent to Rs 537.42 cr for the June quarter compared to the same period last year.
NHPC had a profit of Rs 502.10 crore in June quarter last year, the sources added. Net sales were at Rs 1,019.71 cr compared to Rs 1,060.26 cr in the same quarter last fiscal (2009-10).Sources said several mini-power projects in Doda district and other areas of the state were also nearing completion. These projects would cater to the needs of the local population, the sources added.
Apart from it, the government also planned to produce electricity through unconventional means. Union renewable energy minister Farooq Abdullah had already hinted at initiating steps in this regard soon.
Sources said the state had a great potential in the field of hydro power generation.
There were also plans to set up mini-power projects on the banks of rivulets and nullahs in which water flows throughout the year in Poonch and Rajouri districts, the sources added.
