Katra, July 30: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board which is consistently on path of development for creating facilities for lakhs of pilgrims visiting annually to the Shrine has added another feather in its achievements. In what can be seen as a major initiative for utilizing and demonstrating the use of renewable energy, Shrine Board has commissioned a Solar Power Plant at the Holy Shrine and a Solar Power based Water Heating Plant at Katra.

A Solar Water Heating System with 5000 litre per day capacity has been installed at Shakti Bhawan, Katra and a 5 KW Solar Power Plant at Bhawan. These two projects, aimed at both utilizing and demonstrating the potential of Solar Power, have been set up with support from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under its Special Area Demonstration Projects Scheme. It is pertinent to mention here that Dr Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of J&K state who holds this vital portfolio has already expressed his keenness to enable the entire state harness the potential of Renewable energy, assuring full support to such projects launched in all the three regions of the state.

The Governor, N. N. Vohra, who is also the Chairman of the SMVDSB, who has been stressing the importance of such projects being set up on a time bound basis, has asked the Chief Executive Officer to identify various locations between Katra and the Shrine for establishing similar projects. The CEO has reported to the Governor that two other projects , a Mule Dung based biogas plant of 4 Tons per day capacity and a Solar Emergency Lighting System, are also being planned on a time-limited basis.

In view of the progressive increase in the number of Yatris visiting the Holy Cave Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, the Governor has been laying very high emphasis on tapping all possible renewable energy sources. The Governor has also called upon all the Hotel Owners at Katra to set up Solar Power Plants in every Hotel for saving on electricity, the supply of which is far short of the ever increasing demand.

The CEO also disclosed that, on the Governor’s instructions, 33,000 forest plants of different species and 4000 flowering plants are being planted in the Yatra area during the current rainy season, to beautify the tracks to the Shrine.

The other significant initiatives launched by the Shrine Board this year include a number of fire prevention measures in identified sectors, creation of fire lines, controlled burning of grasses and providing comprehensive Disaster Management training to the Board’s employees.

Against the backdrop of magnificent Trikuta hills the world famous Shrine will now have a full-fledged master plan to ensure planned infrastructural development.Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) is preparing a master plan for the Bhawan area of the cave shrine with a view to execute need-based and planned development in future, Additional Chief Executive Officer (ACEO) Dr M K Bhandari said today. In this direction, SMVDSB has invited expression of interest from suitable and reputed area planning Organisations, he said.In order to combat the environment and ecology related problems on long term basis on account of huge infrastructural work in and around Bhawan and enroute cave shrine with hundreds of buildings setup from Banganga to Bhawan in Trikuta hills, the master plan would ensure maintenance of environment, ecology and planned infrastructural development in and around Bhawan, he said.
