NC leader occupies nomad sheds in Poonch | A private school being run from army's Sadbhavana building | | Early Times Report, Rajouri, Aug 1: This year the migratory population lost thousands of livestock in the open air due to heavy rainfall. Reason: The shelter sheds constructed by Army under operation Sadbhavana have allegedly been occupied by a leader of National Conference party in Sawjian area of border district Poonch. One such building is also being used for running a private school in the area by the leader. Sources said that Bakerwals of Poonch district had suffered heavy losses of animals this year due to non-availability of any place or shelter on their way to greenland pastures of Kashmir Valley as the sheds constructed for them were occupied by some local politicians. "Bakerwals are suffering in this area due to occupation of sheds by the politicians", a local Bakerwal of Poonch Mohammad Afzal said. Sources said that a political leader claiming himself as National Conference leader has allegedly occupied shelter shed of nomads. The shed was constructed at Brari Nallah in Mandi tehsil by army under operation Sadbhavana and they had spent Rs 18 lakh on it. Following its completion, the shed was handed over to the people for use to nomads who passed through the year in the month of March-April and November-December. However, sources said that the politician has occupied this building and is running a private school from it. "A local leader of NC has entered in the shelter shed of Bakerwals in Sawjian area and he is not vacating it despite requests from the nomads", a local resident of Sawjian told here.. In Gagarian area of Mandi tehsil, Army had constructed a community hall in Gagarian area of for the locals and the same is also allegedly occupied by the same leader. Sources said that army had spent Rs 8 lakh on the project and it was constructed for whole people of the area especially Gujjars and Bakerwals who were facing problem of accommodations in marriages and other ceremonies but now it has no more remain a public property. "The same leader who has occupied shelter shed at Sawjian has also occupied this community hall and made it a private property", residents of the village alleged. Sources, further, said that though senior Congress leader and Vice Chairman of J&K State Gujjar & Bakerwal Advisory Board Bashir Ahmed Naz had already highlighted the issue and had issued strict directions to the Deputy Commissioner, Poonch. However, no action has been taken even though DDC had reportedly constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Additional Commissioner Development Poonch. When contacted, Minister Bashir Ahmed Naz said that these structures are being occupied by a local NC leader and he is also running a school from one building. "Our people are facing problems and some people are enjoying public property and using it as its own", he said adding that Army had constructed these buildings for the convenience of the nomads who pass through the area two times in a year. Showing his resentment against the officers investigating the illegal occupation of local leader, Naz said that though he had strictly directed Deputy Commissioner, Poonch to take action in this regard and vacate these buildings from the illegal occupation of some local leader, no action was taken. "I came to know that DDC had constituted a committee under the chairmanship of ACD with local BDO as member but both these officers have failed to report the findings and vacate these buildings", Bashir Naz said. Meanwhile, State Secretary of SC ST Confederation, Liaqet Choudhary has termed it injustice with the nomads and demanded immediate action in this regard by the government. "I will raise the issue of occupying nomad shelter sheds by some people in Poonch with the government", Liaqet Choudhary said adding that there are also few sheds on Mughal road which have collapsed or turned defunct and needed attention of the government. "Government must construct shelter sheds on Mughal Road for nomads as they are suffering a loss of thousands of animals every year due to open air camping in these areas", he added. |
