Dissidents in Congress display limitless opportunism | | | Even opportunism has limits. But as far as the machinations of the dissidents in the Congress are concerned their politics of opportunism seems to be limitless. The Kashmir valley has been on the boil during the last two months.About 30 civilians have been killed and over 300 persons, including over 160 security personnel, have been injured. The ruling coalition is doing all that is possible for it to douse the flames of violence without kicking up some fresh controversy. No doubt the political leaders belonging to the mainstream spectrum have not been able to counter the sparatists campaign politically, the Congress has continued to lend support to Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, who is engaged in tackling the turmoil. However, expectedly the dissidents in the Congress do not seem concerned over the level of violence in the valley. They seem to be interested in regaining power for themselves. Most of those belonging to the camp of the dissidents have been rejected by the people,to be precise by the voters,in the previous Assembly election still they have not stopped making it dificult not only for the state unit of the Congress but for the National Conference too.Of late they have started using the turmoil in Kashmir for securing an edge over the loyalists.Expectedly these dissidents have suggested to the party high command that the Union Health Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azad,be asked to head the Government in Jammu and Kashmir once Chief Minikster,Omar Abdullah, resigned. This demand is not only ridiculous but has serious political ramifications.Well Azad has been tried and tested as Chief Minister, between 2005 and 2008.As the Chief Minister he has not displayed any significant trait that could motivate the party high command to repose trust in him by inst alling him as the Chief Minister. Those who have watched the developments within the state unit of the Congress during the last over 20 years they are convinced that even as senior AICC leaders and Union Minister Azad has been instrumental in sowing the seeds of groupism in the organisation.During thse years he had not allowed a free hand to successive PCC Presidents right from Ghulam R asool Kar down to Saif-ud-Din Soz.The dissidents seem to have been so much swayed by self-interest that they do not realise that change of guard at this juncture could be further exploited by the separatists and by the agencies across the border.Actually the dissidents do not want to see Soz continue to head the PCC and once Azad is installed as Chief Minister he would further clip the wings of Soz.The party high command has realised that Soz has functioned as PCC Chief properly and whatever shortcomings have been there were the result of continued campaign launched against him by the dissidents.Congress sources say that majority of dissidents do not have any base in the state but they have managed to survive only because of continued patronage they have been receiving from Azad.Judged by the level of violence and by the plan of the Lashkar-i-Toiba activists to incite people to take to the streets for attacking security force any idea for replacing Omar by Azad could prove highly counterproductive. The current agitation is not directed against Omar or the Government he heads. It is an agitation against the state's accession with India, against Delhi and against the Indian Army.It is an agitation for reversing the state's accession with India either by giving people freedom or allowing them,as a small section of people want,to get the valley incorporated with Pakistan. In such a situation installing Azad as Chief Minister can have no relevance or impact.Yes,as Chief Minister Azad can rehabilitate some of the leaders belonging to the dissident camp by giving them plump posts and berth in the council of ministers. What the state needs is not a divided but a Congress.Possibilities if hammering out reconciliation between the two factions seem to be remote so long the dissidents receive moral, political and material support from Azad
