Champions play goalless draw as Tripura, Special, NW win ties
DIG declares open Inter-Sector CRPF Hockey Tourney

JAMMU, August 02: Defending Champions, Southern Sector could not make it a flying start when the side held goalless draw by Eastern Sector in a group-A league tie on the opening day of the 19th Inter-Sector Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Hockey Tournament at KK Hakhu Stadium, here today.
In another group-A league match, Tripura Sector registered a big 11-0 win over Srinagar Sector. MD Salim scripted big win for Tripura contributing six goals to the tally thereby virtually making it a one-sided contest. He scored in 17th, 24th, 39th, 44th, 46th and 47th minute of the match. Mandeep Singh added two more goals to the tally sounding the board in 27th and 32nd (pc) while Jakush Bilung (23rd), Sandeep Singh (26th) and J Kullu (49th) added one each.
Last year’s runners-up, North Western Sector made a good beginning when they registered 5-1 win over Rapid Action Force (RAF) Sector in a match played in the afternoon session.
In another match of the day, Special Sector blanked Northern Sector 4-0. Vinod Tirki scored in 5th and 35th minute while Talwinder Singh added two goals netting in the 27th (pc) and 40th (ps) minutes of the match.
Other two position holder teams of last year, bronze winner, Bihar Sector and Western Sector (fourth) are yet to launch their campaign in the league round.
Earlier, the five-day long tournament was declared open by Deputy Inspector General (DIG), IG Jammu Frontier Operations, Kulbeer Singh, who was chief guest in the inaugural function. He highlighted the achievements of the Force in sports by recalling the contributions of weightlifter, Kunja Rani, swimmer, Khajan Singh and shooter, Taru Ram.
In all, 14 teams representing different sectors of the CRPF are taking part in this competition on league-cum-knockout basis.
FIXTURE: Southern Sector V/s Tripura Sector at 6 am; Bihar Sector V/s Central Sector at 7 am; Western Sector V/s North Eastern Sector at 8 am; Southern Sector V/s Srinagar Sector at 4 pm; Northern Sector V/s Rapid Action Force Sector at 5 pm.
