Unsound planning by PDD and Flood Control Deptt | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 2: Once again the carelessness of Power Development (PDD) and Flood Control Department of the state has resulted in damages to the crops of poor farmers in this monsoon season. In village Khrappa of Krishanpur area of bloc Dansal, district Jammu, state government has decided to set up a power grid station. For this purpose the PDD department has purchased land to the tune of 1100 Kanals in 1990. The project was delayed for a long time for reasons best known to the concerned authorities. Three years ago, the PDD department started work on the project and leveled the land and filled "seasonal nullahs" flowing across the land without thinking what would happen in case of flood waters swelled in these nullahs. Owing to incessant monsoon rains, the nullahs are flooded, which resulted in loss to the maize crop spread over 300-400 Kanals of land adjoining proposed site for the grid station. People of the locality alleged that these nullahs were covered by the PDD for construction of buildings without taking into account the consequences of their decision. Locals also stated that there were poor farmers exclusively depending on agricultural activities as their source of sustenance. When contacted for his comments, MLA Nagrota, Jugal Kishore Sharma said that he had also visited the area to take stock of the situation. He gave assurance of conducting a meeting with the PDD authorities to address the problems faced by the locals.. Chief Engineer PDD Mohammad Qazmi could not be contacted for his comments even after repeated attempts. |
