Omar Abdullah playing the opposition's role

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 2: The beleaguered Chief Minister Omar Abdullah says that his "politics is not politics of deceit, intrigue and machinations" and that his "politics is politics of truth, sincerity, integrity and commitment to the people of J&K." He also says that "from day one, I have advocated withdrawal of the AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) and phased reduction of the Army from the valley but for that conducive atmosphere is a must" and that "some anti-social elements are hell bend to foment trouble, mayhem and bloodshed in the valley to satiate their political designs".
What does all this suggest? It suggests two definite things. One is that the Chief Minister is basically committed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir (read people of Kashmir). The Kashmiri leaders always talk of Jammu and Kashmir while referring to the so-called Kashmir problem, but when they talk about the solution to the so-called Kashmir problem, they only talk of the Valley and its people belonging to a particular religious denomination and their "alienation"; their "psyche"; their needs" and their "aspirations." They want to impose the separatist and communal will of the Kashmiri leadership on the unwilling people of Jammu and Ladakh and religious and ethnic minorities in the state, including Kashmiri Hindus, Shiite Muslims, Sikh and Gujjar and Bakerwal Muslims, who have linked their political fate with New Delhi, for better for worse. They want to consolidate the Kashmir's hegemony over Jammu and Ladakh so that the people of Kashmir prosper and lead a luxurious life at the cost of the people of the state's two other regions.
Kashmir, it needs to be noted, cannot survive even for a day if Jammu province is segregated from Kashmir. Jammu, besides New Delhi, is the backbone of the Kashmir's economy. That's the basic reason why the Kashmiri leadership always opposes the demand in Jammu for separation from the Valley.
The other is that the Chief Minister, like the Kashmiri separatists and the PDP leadership, hates the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the CRPF and wants these to be withdrawn from the state. His only refrain or compulsion is that the situation for that is not conducive. Had he and his party been in opposition, they would have taken a different stand. They, like the PDP leaders and other Kashmiri separatists, would have unleashed a no-holds-barred propaganda blitz against the AFSPA, the Army and the CRPF. Since he is Chief Minister and since he has to protect his chair, he is telling the people of Kashmir that he does want the AFSPA and the CRPF to go, but the activities of certain vested interests have not permitted him to do so.
The very fact that the Jammu and Kashmir has constituted a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances under which 17 protestors died in Kashmir between June 11 and July 11 is a proof that his attitude towards the CRPF is no different from that of the PDP and all other Kashmir-based outfits, including the separatists and the so-called mainstream, including the CPI and the CPI-M. Each one of the Kashmir-based outfits identifies itself with the protestors, "unruly mobs" and other disturbers of peace; defends their actions; and consistently says that the application of the AFSPA and the use of services of the CRPF for maintaining peace and tranquility have been - apart from other factors - responsible for the "alienation of Kashmiri Muslims" and "hurting their psyche."
To be more precise, the Kashmiri leaders, without any exception, are one as far as their attitude towards the Indian Army, the CRPF, the Border Security Force and the anti-terror laws, including the AFSPA and the Public Safety Act (PSA), is concerned. It is, however, a different matter that the party in power exploits to the hilt the services of the Army and paramilitary forces and books undesirable elements under the PSA in order to ensure the safety of its leadership. It is important to note that when the PDP was in power it never raised even its little finger against the Army, the paramilitary Forces, the AFSPA and the PSA. The PDP needed all these, and, hence, maintained silence. The moment it was thrown out of power, it unleashed a relentless campaign against the Army, the paramilitary forces and the anti-terror laws and the campaign continues unabated. (To be concluded)
