Dropping Omar can be major political blunder: Cong loyalists | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 2: The PDP leadership seems to be divided over the demand for the imposition of the Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir. While the vice president of the party, Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, favours immediate sacking of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, and placing the state under the Governor's rule his colleague in the PDP, Nizam-ud-Bhat , opposed the imposition of the central rule. However, both the leaders want Omar to go. They said "since Omar has become a symbol of hate in Kashmir the situation can improve only when he is asked to step down." Bhat said "imposition of Governor's rule is no solution to the current wave of turmoil. What is required is immediate replacement of Omar Abdullah." Asked whether Farooq Abdullah can be the right choice he said it was for the centre to find out. On the other hand Molvi Ansari said "Farooq or any other leader cannot resolve the crisis." He said if the state was placed under a brief spell of central rule the possible options will come up after the situation witnessed improvement. He was confident that change of Omar Abdullah was the need of the time. A couple of ministers belonging to the Congress emphatically opposed any move to change the guard at the current moment. One Minister said that if Omar Abdullah was asked to resign it will give further sustenance to the separatists. He said in that case the separatists would think that they are the king makers and breakers. Another Minister said that "there was no question of changing the guard in the state." He blamed not only the separatists and the opposition PDP but the dissidents in the Congress for inciting violence in Kashmir. He alleged that the Union Health Minister was also behind the move aimed at replacing Omar Abdullah by Farooq Abdullah because he (Azad) wanted to rehabilitate his supporters in the council of Ministers. The Minister disclosed that Farooq Abdullah had phoned him this morning to find out whether change of guard could improve the situation. He said "I informed Farooq Abdullah that changing Omar at this time would amount to a major political blunder." He too accused dissidents, patronised by Azad, for trying to mislead the Congress high command that if Azad was installed as Chief Minister the situation would improve. He said this was not based on facts. The loyalists in the Congress have deputed two MPS and PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz, to Delhi for convincing the party high command that any move to drop Omar Abdullah could have negative impact on the political situation in Kashmir. One of the ministers said that Omar has been working hard for developing the economy of the sate but the way his detractors have incited people against him was highly unfortunate. As far as the National Conference is concerned the rank and file in the party is divided between those who support Farooq Abdullah and those siding with Omar Abdullah. The reason being that those supporting installation of Farooq believe that under farooq's leadership they would not be sidelined. But pro-Omar lobby within the National Conference has cautioned the centre against committing any mistake by replacing Omar either by Farooq or by Azad. While the PDP leaders believe that the current wave of turmoil is part of the anger of people against Omar Abdullah those in the Congress and the National Conference are of the opinion that violence in the valley is stage managed by the separatists and their patrons across the border. They say this is evident from the nature of slogans being shouted in favour of "azadi." |
