Conundrums of Kashmir muddle | | Shiban Khaibri | 8/3/2010 11:50:14 PM |
| It is high time that those Kashmiri leaders who have made a mess of Kashmir, should abandon politics of hate and violence , abjure exploiting the people on religious and sentimental issues or else, sooner than later, it shall be proved beyond any doubt, that these leaders were the worst enemies of Kashmir and Kashmiris.
Dialogue, discussions and respecting changed realities are the assured concomitants to solutions, should there be genuine grievances and demands. Resorting to violence , have all these twenty one years, resulted in chaos, confusion, death, destruction, painful exodus of ethnic minority and denigrating of cherished human values. The ongoing acts of violence across the valley unfortunately claiming precious human lives , besides destruction of properties are leading to nowhere .
Raising absurd slogans and defacing walls with “Quit Kashmir “ and “Go India go back “ or sustaining the Tehrik-e-Sangbazi associated with shut downs and hartals, are going to yield no results, except resulting in difficulties for a commoner who wants to live peacefully. Kashmir problem is not political in as much as it is stuffed with fundamentalism and religious considerations which is not to be dreamt of getting “solved” in isolation, as per the wishes of Syed Geelani and others of his ilk. It may fairly be noted that Kashmir as integral part of India, is the basic guarantee of the sustenance of Indian secularism. It is not, even in the least, a collateral security there against. Disturbed, it has the ramifications to change the structure of the sub-continent and lead to a” no win- no win “position, at least for those who are aspiring to wrest Kashmir from India or to those who are at the behest of these elements. The media, the intellectuals and the “experts “on Kashmir affairs in the country have now to review their role in the fast changing environs vis-à-vis Kashmir. The futile rhetoric, partisan and one sided public debates and discussions on Kashmir on some private TV channels have to give place to ground realities and the security forces not projected as the whipping boys and made the scapegoats , though the room for the provision of exercising of restraint, can always be mooted. “Failed political process”, “alienation of people”, backwardness, unemployment, etc; are hypothetical and imaginary causes that are routinely parroted in respect of Kashmir imbroglio which tantamount to beating about the bush and misleading the masses. Likewise, political parties with divergent political philosophies shall prove themselves to have committed irretrievable political hara-kiri ,in case they paint Kashmir matters with their choice of colours, to the peril of the country’s interests. Duty towards the country is paramount, foremost and sacrosanct. It has to be seen that the death of two unfortunate ladies in Shopian sparked protests with slogans not against alleged police inaction but with,” Hum kya chahete- Azadi” , “Hum kya chahete – Nizam-e-Mustafa .” A leader of the mainstream political party was found raising slogan,”Masla-e- Kashmir Hal karo, Hal karo.” She appeared to take out some political capital out of the death of these unfortunate ladies. Therefore, much has to be read and deduced from the ongoing violence .Malady is either not properly diagnosed or medication is faulty. Jammu, the major part of the total state, won’t in any way agree to Syed Geelani or to those who are noising just for the sake of noise, in congruence with the elements which are up against India by putting forth Tagalukian solutions of self rule, dual currency and irrelevant borders or autonomy. Similarly the people of Ladakh won’t agree to any of the” solution models” of Geelani or others. Kashmiri Pandits, internally displaced, reeling under the exodus, do rubbish and reject ab-initio, the Geelani solution, or any other solution which dilutes or weakens India’s position in Kashmir and can never agree to or believe in a theocratic Kashmir, in that their demand for a separate Homeland in Kashmir, stands fully vindicated. Other minorities would never like to dare breathe in the Geelanian Pakistani Kashmir or self ruled or “autonomied “’ Kashmir.
It is a travesty that sufferings, death and destruction have shockingly all these years of proxy war, been on this side. Our people, whether a citizen or a police person get killed as a fallout of an illusory cause floated from the other side. What could not be achieved by Qabayali attacks in 1947, the wars of 1965 and 1971, cannot be achieved by employing demeaning tactics by and at the behest of Pakistan, the country which can never be believed and wholly trusted. Regarding “ Talking “ to Pakistan to settle the “issue”, fingers get crossed as on the one hand, it engaged India in the process of confidence building measures while it hobnobbed with elements against India and our embassy was attacked in Kabul. Less said the better, about Agra fiasco, Kargil war et-al. Our sincerity to resolve the problems have never been positively reciprocated by Pakistan, that being a stark fact the recent outcome of the ministerial level talks between the two countries bear a testimony. Pakistan is milking America in billions of dollars to fight Taliban; at the same time, it is hand in glove with the Taliban, if the recent sensational findings of Wiki Leaks are read in between the lines. Our commitments in Afghanistan are a bete-noire to that country, the army chief of which does not like even our consulates there and wants them to be closed for obvious perverted ambitions of that country. It may be realized that various wings of Pakistani establishment, ISI, army and other religio-political forces are bent upon denying a peaceful normal life to Kashmiri people like they used to live and enjoying living prior to 1990. Pakistan brazenly exploits Kashmiri Muslims to do Jehad and to remain in Jehadi fatigues till that country is assured of some hope of getting Kashmir, the real meaning of Jehad notwithstanding. In that, it hardly matters to them if precious human lives are lost in the violence. It is of no significance if schools and colleges remain closed for weeks together and thus education is denied to Kashmiri students by Pakistan and by those Kashmiri leaders who toe to their line. Do not “Go India Go Back “ like slogans stench of a mindset of zealotry where inclusiveness and respecting the social motto of co-existence and “live and let live” have no place ? Looking to the present scenario in the valley, the question is where these leaders are leading Kashmir and the people to ? What idea of Kashmir to look like, are they intending to sell to the innocent people? Most likely to be ruled, dictated and administered by the Taliban. Much water has flown down the Veth (Jehlum) all these 63 years. If borders are to be rendered irrelevant in Kashmir, why not do the same with other borders of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat etc; and thus reverse the process of partition? There also, alibi can be that families were divided due to partition. It shall mean for hard core Taliban to make a cake walk into Kashmir and reverse or set in process to revert, to their type of things. In Kashmir, literacy rate among women is considerable and there are many top physicians, surgeons, teachers, advocates, employees in PSUs, airlines, banks, hospitals, police, government offices etc; who shall have to face difficulties under Talibanan way of things where women are required to remain indoors, attend to domestic chorus and venture out, only in the company of father, brother, son or husband. Hypothetically speaking, how shall the “AZADI “got from India look like, then? Public whipping, stoning and awarding capital punishments at the drop of a hat, can traumatize the people even by thinking about it. Is this type of “Azadi “for Kashmiris being envisaged through acts of violence? It is high time the Government of India reviews and revamps its Kashmir policy and not resort to patch working approach; instead it should take bold decisions and actions in tracing the nuts and bolts of the problem in the interests of people of the state. Central government should not get blackmailed into allowing various “stalls” and compartments of different solution modules like autonomy, self rule, etc; to arrive only at rolling stone gathering no mass. We know the source of the trouble is Pakistan with whom, undoubtedly, we have to mend our fences. It demands bold decisions and actions, no matter at what price. **********
