v500 Cops wounded since January, 12 Police stations torched | JKP bears brunt of on-going turmoil | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 3: The police have been at the receiving end this year notwithstanding the Khatam Shareef (devotional prayer) held in the police control room on January 30. During the past ten days twelve police stations and police posts have been attacked by angry youth across Kashmir. The stone pelting incidents have left more than 500 police men wounded till date. The police had tastefully decorated the room where the devotional prayer meeting was held. It was an ideal environment for a prayer meeting meant for peace and tranquility in the conflict ridden state. But the feast went in vain. The assembly did not yield the desired results. The prayer meeting was well conducted but something went wrong somewhere. Peace became a casualty next day and to add insult to injury stone pelting youth did not spare the Control Room building where the Khatam Shareef was held. A day after the police hosted the feast, a youth Wamiq Farooq was killed by a police official in down town Srinagar. The killing evoked severe reaction across Kashmir. At least 150 persons including 50 police and CRPF men sustained injuries in violent clashes that crippled life for five days in Srinagar and other major towns of the Valley. Since then the police has been at the receiving end. The stone pelters have given a tough time to the men in uniform. The `fight' against the police force took a new turn last week when angry mobs started attacking the police stations and police posts across Kashmir. According to an NDTV report, twelve police stations and posts have been attacked, ransacked since the past ten days. Some of the police stations have been set ablaze. The news channel while describing it (attack on police channels) a disturbing trend said the police men were scared of venturing out in troubled areas. They come out in civvies and do not carry their identity cards along. The leader of opposition in Parliament, LK Advani took the government to task `mishandling' Kashmir situation. Quoting a senior police officer of the state, he said the police had never faced such difficult times in Kashmir. |
