PDP and separatists hold different views on restoration of peace in valley | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 4: The opposition PDP and a section of the Kashmiri separatists differ as far as the issue pertaining to Omar Abdullah's continuance as Chief Minister of the troubled state was concerned. While the PDP leadership believes that change in the guard could lead to improvement in the security scenario the separatists have a different perception of the problem. A senior Hurriyat Conference leader, Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, said that change of guard "can have no bearing on the volatile situation in the Kashmir valley." In support of his argument he said that the current turmoil, unrest and street protests were not aimed at destabilising Omar Abdullah led Government but to highlight the basic problem of delay in the resolution of the Kashmir issue. Against this vice president of the PDP, Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, said "let Omar Abdullah resign or let the centre sack him and place the state under the Governor's rule the situation in the valley will improve within one week." He said Omar Abdullah "has become a symbol of hatred for the Kashmiris and hence if he opts out the bloodshed will end." However, Bhat stated that if the centre and the state Government examined the basic issues that had been responsible the current turmoil they will find that the delay in the settlement in the Kashmir issue has been the cause of the unrest and violence in the valley. He said the situation "will start improving once Delhi resumed talks with Islamabad" adding that such talks should be only Kashmir centric. This is the external factor that Delhi has to address and as far as the internal factor needed to be addressed relates to the resumption of Kashmir specific parleys with "us and our fellow travellers." He made it clear that the current turmoil has only political connotations and no economic ramifications. In support of his contention he said that during the two-month long turmoil no slogans were shouted against unemployment and poverty, no slogans were raised against erratic electricity and drinking water supply. Bhat said that this very development needs to be taken into account by Delhi. In reply to a question the Hurriyat leader said that "use of brute force may force protesters to suspend their campaign for the resolution of the Kashmir issue but it cannot silence their aspirations, sentiments and anger." He said "if today protesters are forced to lie low they will rise again and Kashmir will be on the boil once more as has been witnessed during the last over 20 years." On the other hand, Molvi Ansari and Harsh Dev Singh, Working Chairman of the Panthers Party, stated that any change in the Government, even if it included imposition of Governor's rule for a brief period, could prove beneficial as it was bound to restore peace and normalcy to the valley. The BJP leadership too supported the demand for the imposition of the Governor's rule. It also has suggested to the centre and the state authorities to initiate firm measures against those inciting violence and against those indulging in acts of sabotage and subversion.
