No takers of GBP Hostel housed in rented building
Boarders rue authorities
8/5/2010 9:55:37 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 5: Despite the tall claims of State Government to provide facilities to the students of the far flung areas condition on the ground shows a dismal picture.
It may be worthwhile to mention here that some few years back, the state government decided to establish a hostel in the winter capital exclusively for Pahari students from the far flung areas of the state particularly from district Poonch and Rajouri. Even the construction on government building at Ban Talab Jammu is going but on snail’s pace.
But nothing concrete was done to construct a building in Jammu, and since then the hostel is running on a rented building which sans basic facilities.
Presently the Government Boys Pahari Hostel (GBPH) is housed in a private rented building at Shastri Nagar, Jammu. About 50 boarders are residing in this building. Criticising the alleged negligent attitude of the concerned authorities, the hostel inmates said that there are 20 rooms in total and more than two boarders are forced to share the room. Students from 6th to Post Graduate courses are putting in the hostel at present. Students demanded coaching facilities to students of 6th to 12th standard students and also transport facilities to them. They further said there is no play ground and also there are no proper facilities of the electricity and water.
Boarders also said that the hostel has no transport, ambulance and also no proper library for the students.
When contacted president Pahari speaking Students Union Kadir Khan said ``we had also made a representation to the concerned minister few days ago. The minister assured us that the building would be completed within two months’’.
He stated that how the building would get completed in two months when even its pillars were not completely erected as yet.
Kadir Khan also put forth the demand of a Pahari Hostel for girls of the community. He also warned agitation from the students of the community if their demands are not met.
