Hurriyat hawk's peace talk raises doubts in valley | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 5: The hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani's peace talk has given birth to doubts in the valley that he must have struck a "peace deal" with the Omar government in lieu of his release from the jail. Geelani, arrested a month and a half back under PSA, was set free Wednesday in a last-ditch bid by the government to end the cycle of violence in the valley. The first thing he did after his release was to address a press conference at his Hyderpora residence in Srinagar and appeal to the violent mobs prowling the streets to eschew violence and hold eaceful protests. Long regarded as a hardline separatist, he surprised all when he came out against the current violence in Kashmir and asked the agitators not to indulge in stone pelting and burning of public property. Soon after his appeal was aired on TV news channels, the protesters were taken aback. The valley was buzzing with rumours that he must have struck some deal with the government which had released and allowed him to speak to media. The offering of the olive branch to Geelani is also seen as the last attempt by the Omar government to restore peace in the valley and save his beleaguered government. It was Geelani on whose call people were protesting and holding demonstrations since June 11, resulting in the death of about 40 people in clashes with police. Now, while asking people to hold peaceful demonstrations, he insisted he had never encouraged violence. A month and a half back, he was booked under PSA for instigating violence. And, his release at a time when violence was at its peak speaks of a secret "peace deal" between him and the government.Though those indulging in violence at the behest of Pakistan's ISI by making women and children their shield may be opposed to the Geelani's peace initiative, there are many takers for the Omar's this new strategy. If it works, it can help in cooling the tempers in the valley. The hardliner Hurriyat leader's role is of great significance especially when anti-India forces are appealing the people to flood the streets and face troops as the "victory was near". Though protests continued after his appeal too, clashes with police were fewer. At the same time, Geelani very cleverly used the occasion for himself too when he said he and his people would continue protests until Indian forces were withdrawn from Kashmir and their demand for 'right to self-determination' was conceded. Roping in Geelani for restoration of peace in Kashmir at this juncture could be termed as a great political victory of Omar, who otherwise is accused of being politically immature. |
