SMGS Hospital understaffed | | | Early Times Report Jammu, August 6: Negating the tall claims of the state government particularly the health department to provide better health facilities to the people of state, many hospitals of the state are suffering from acute shortage of medical and paramedical staff. This was evident from the situation obtaining in one of oldest hospitals of the State, namely Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital, Jammu, where there is acute shortage of medical and paramedical staff. The hospital having the streams of Pediatrics, ENT, Gynecology and other related branches of medical science are affected because of lack of requisite staff. The most important department dealing with the life of a majority of patients is Pediatrics. Absence of ventilators, the most important requirement of Pediatrics is causing much worry to the patients and their wards. There is only one ventilator in the SMGS hospital but it is not operational because of lack of paramedical staff. This hospital is one of the oldest in Jammu region and it was established in 1946. Director Health Services, Jammu Dr Jasbir Singh could not be contacted and he evaded phone calls on the pretext of some important meeting. When contacted Minister for Medical Education, Youth and Sports R S Chib for his comments on the issue, he said that very soon the deficiency of the staff would be overcome as the selection process for various posts in the medical department would be conducted on August 16, 2010 and the other related vacancies would also be filled shortly. He also said that we are working for removing the deficiency of staff to provide better facilities in the hospitals associated with Medical Education department of the state.
