Pak not cooperating on detained prisoners identification | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 6: The Counsel of the Union Government informed the Supreme Court of India that Pakistan is not cooperating for the identification of its national who have completed their respective sentences in different Indian prisons. The Additional Solicitor General informed the Division Bench comprising JJ Altmas Kabir and AK Patnaik today that one Waqar Shah has been waiting for his identification by Pakistani authority in Tihar Jail and Pakistani authorities have not cared to confirm whether Waqar Shah detained in Tihar Jail is Pak-national or not. A petition by the State Legal Aid Committee, J&K headed by Prof Bhim Singh, a senior jurist and human rights activist was filed in the Supreme Court seeking release and repatriation of several Pak and POK residents who have completed their respective sentences in different Indian jails. The Supreme Court directed the Union of India to file its affidavit disclosing whether Pakistan has confirmed Waqar Shah’s Pak-nationality and if so what steps have been taken for his deportation. The Supreme Court also directed the Union of India, Govt of Delhi and State of J&K to file the status report about Abdul Hayya Malik who was arrested in 1995 under various offences registered in J&K and Delhi. The court granted two weeks to the Central Government, J&K Government and Government of Delhi to file status report along with respective FIRs registered against Abdul Hayya Malik. Prof Bhim Singh appearing for the prisoners submitted that both Central and State governments have been playing ‘hide and seek’ with the court for reasons best known to them.
