8/7/2010 9:40:19 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Leh, Aug 7: The Indian army, state police force and the civil administration in Leh and its adjoining areas have all swung into action and set relief centres to provide medical care and other facilities to the needy in time.
On Saturday as Indian Air Force planes started landing at Leh along with relief supplies, medical teams and other material, a group of rescue workers engaged in relief operations heaved a sigh of relief.
For over last 36 hours, a group of foreign nationals had volunteered themselves to join the rescue operations in Leh and were working tirelessly without a break. Along with them at least 6000 army personnel and hundred others have been helping the local administration in relief and rescue operations.
Majority of these foreign nationals stranded in Leh were visiting there for the first time when the cloudburst triggered torrential rains in the area and left more than 130 dead and over 400 others missing. Instead of moving out of the area these foreign nationals decided to stay put in the area and helped the rescue teams.
According to ministry of defence spokesman, the relief and rescue operations were going on in full swing and the medical teams of the Indian army are attending to the injured and those in a state of trauma at medical centres set up in Leh to extend medical care to them.
Meanwhile, two similar relief centres were set up by the civil administration for the injured in Leh.
There is no trace of over 400 people since Thursday night, a rescue worker in Leh said. Among them included large number of security personnel, including army jawans, labourers and local residents who were washed away in flash floods.
Meanwhile, three senior ministers including Union Health Minister GhulamNabi Azad, Dr Farooq Abdullah and Prithvi Raj Chouhan visited Leh on Saturday to take stock of the ongoing rescue operations.
