Real challenge for PM from Kashmir based politicians? | All Party talks on Aug 10 | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Aug 7: Notwithstanding his 'peace making' efforts during the past few days , separatist hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani has issued fresh calendar today, underscoring among other related programmes for the masses to follow, the need to continue protests, apparently in a bid to keep up the spirit and tempo of the 'movement'. And in the backdrop of this fresh calendar, the mainstream parties and politicians who matter in the state politics have started receiving the invitations for All party talks , this time with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh scheduled on August 10. While the main Opposition Party PDP has already made clear its mind and the stand that it has no inclination nor sees no reason to attend the meeting on the premise that this is implementation of the decision taken in All Party Meeting convened by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the state last month to seek suggestions on diffusing the situation in Kashmir. So far so good, but the fact remains that as on date even within PDP diverse views in terms of how to respond to the situation politically have surfaced in context of veteran leader Muzaffar Baig's resignation as MLA. As far as other political parties are concerned, even as the unanimity prevails this time too on participation, but the approach and stance may be seen differently in the August 10 meeting, even though the agenda remains same- seeking views and suggestions on diffusing the turbulent situation and of course evolving some kind of political consensus on the political package to follow as and when the 'normalcy' is restored. Now the moot question here arises will there be a 'political consensus' at all during the talks of delegated all parties with the Prime Minister. The question has also gained some strength also in the backdrop of some dissenting and different voices even within the coalition partners National Conference and Congress on bigger issue of continuance of this popular government led by Omar Abdullah or Governor's rule as an option. While the stand and views of second largest opposition party BJP are too known to be mentioned on the key issues envisaged under political package like revocation of AFSPA, demilitarization in phases, release of political prisoners etc etc, the party strangely enough has been quiet on the option of imposition of Governor's rule in the state. And in contrast to its, there is strong demand from other Jammu based opposition party J&K Panthers Party in support of dismissal of Omar Abdullah government and imposition of Governors rule. While this has also been a demand, subtly expressed by other key political opponents of NC in Kashmir, but their thrust in the All party talks this time seemingly would not be around the government or governance instead the core issues as assured by Centre , from Home Minister to Prime Minister under the political package. Interestingly, this would also be focus and thrust of ruling National Conference, it being a regional, Kashmir based party where political storm is yet to die down. " We do not want PM to announce any political packages……this would be only insulting at this time…….we want some concrete steps this time and not mere announcements", said a senior NC leader. If that doesn't happen, the relevance and meaning of All Party talks will be lost for ever, said another Kashmir based leader and PDF president Hakim Mohammad Yasin. The talks will have be purposeful and meaningful if Centre really wants crisis to be diffused, he said adding that the issue of governance by the present government or Governor's rule will not be the priority for at least Kashmir based politicians. This has to be decided by the centre and ruling partners themselves, he observed, hinting at some voices within the Congress. "If the Centre fails to reach out with promised political package this time, it would be 'last nail in the coffin'" he further added. Infact, this is what is being expressed by other Kashmir based politicians that if there would no positive outcome of All party talks with PM, the space for mainstream politicians will vanish for ever. And perhaps this would be then last All party meeting in real sense, at least in terms of participation of Kahmir based mainstream politicians who have to face masses backhome. |
