Hour-long rain floods city roads | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 8:Just an hour of heavy rain this afternoon left the city inundated. Rainwater entered houses and shops in several low-lying areas as the drainage system failed to hold the water thereby exposing the claims of the civic authorities that they have spent crores of rupees for setting the proper drainage system. The normal life in various parts of the city threw out of gear with rainwater collecting on the roads while commuters as well as pedestrians had a tough time in moving from one place to another. The situation in posh Gandhi Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Satwari, Digiana, Gangyal, Preet Nagar was even worse as drains were choked and the rain water accumulated on the roads and inner lanes disrupted traffic and posed many hardships to local residents. As rains continued, the residents battling to stop its entry inside the houses lambasted the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) for turning a blind eye towards their miseries. In Nai Basti area roof of a kuccha house collapsed. No report of loss of life or any other damage was reported from anywhere in the city even though at several places people blamed the authorities for their miseries as their valuables were flooded in water. Most of the nallahs flowing through low lying city areas in Satwari, Nai Basti, Jewel Chowk, Rajeev Nagar, Malik Market, Bhatindi, Bagh-e-Bahu area played havoc. “Everytime it rains, our houses get flooded. There is 4-5 ft water on some streets. One gets compensation for damage in floods, but whom should we contact when our houses get flooded each time it rain?”, a resident in Vinayak Bazar, Jewel Chowk asked.
