Missing parapets on NH a risky affair | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, August 9: Every time road accidents take place senior government functionaries and the senior ministers rush to the accident site and take stock of the ground situation but soon after the VVIP visit gets over things become the same. A visit on the Jammu-Kathua stretch of the National highway is enough to expose the grim reality. At more than dozen places a portion of the railing is either completely damaged or missing posing risk for the motorists but till date no sincere attempt has been made to repair the same. How else concerned authorities entrusted with the job of constructing parapets or road dividers on the national highway defend their inabilities to timely construct them despite availability of funds. Under these prevailing circumstances, the night travel on the busy stretch of the highway is more risky and motorists face hardships to figure out the missing portion in the absence of proper lighting facilities on the national highway. The authorities on their part take refuge by saying that new bridges and portion of the highway where these parapets are missing or damaged is being constructed and they cannot divert the major sum of money for the repair works on old bridges. Official sources said, due to absence of parapets on bridges several small vehicles and buses have met with an accident and precious lives were lost in the accidents. The situation is worse on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway where at majority of accident prone sites absence of parapets pose danger to the lives of passengers but no action has been taken by the authorities to do their part of the job and fix the responsibility of the authorities who failed to perform their duties.
