Leh tragedy be treated as national calamity: Karan | | | New Delhi: Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Karan Singh today suggested that flash floods in Leh be treated as a national calamity and offered Rs 50 lakh for relief and rehabilitation work in case such a decision is taken. Condoling the death of around 150 people in the natural disaster, Singh said that the cloudburst has caused immense loss and hundreds were dead and thousansds have been rendered homeless. "I have suggested that this (the disaster) should be treated as a 'National Calamity' so that MPs from all over the country can contribute towards and relief and rehabilitation from their MPLADS fund. "As soon as this is done, I intend to send Rs 50 lakh as my donation," Singh, a Rajya Sabha MP, said in a statement here. The veteran leader also hoped that relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken by the Central and state governments, armed forces and NGOs will succeed in providing adequate alternative shelter in Leh where the winter was fast approaching.
