Factionalism percolates down to PYC level | 'Sloganeering drama' at PCC headquarters | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 9: Marred by factionalism, the headquarters of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee today witnessed 'great drama' of one up man ship between the supporters of Prof Saif-u-Din Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad. When the two groups, this time of the level of PYC tried to outsmart each other by raising the pitch of slogans in favour of respective leaders, the senior functionaries of PCC had to intervene, apparently in order to avoid any clashes. As the supporters of JKPCC Chief Prof Soz outnumbered the Azad loyalists, the latter had to make 'retreat' from the office at Shahidi Chowk. They also failed to make their presence felt politically, the purpose for which they had gathered at the office today. Factionalism is no new phenomenon in the J&K PCC at higher level, with functionaries and even ministers having drawn lines over loyalty with the two stalwarts . The divisions are only getting stronger and sharper on every small and big issue. But this time, the factionalism got reflected at the level of Pradesh Youth Congress leadership, senior functionaries, including the president of which were recently nominated by Rahul Gandhi for the state. Amrinder Singh Raja, General Secretary Youth Congress and incharge of J&K Youth Congress, who arrived today from Delhi also witnessed the 'lines' drawn between supporters of two groups. It all happened when the supporters of RS Pathania, the newly nominated vice president of J&K Youth Congress, who also reached Jammu today, sought to organize some kind reception at the party headquarters. Pathania, is believed to the loyalist of Azad faction. The supporters of this group alleged they were not allowed to do so by the functionaries of PCC, most of whom owe allegiance to Prof Soz. "RS Pathania also wanted to unfurl the party flag and speak on the occasion but he could not do either of the two…..", said one of his supporters who had assembled at PCC office. However, the sources in PCC functionaries say the main hall of the office was already occupied in connection with some other function related to "Quit India Movement" day celebrations. Sources said both Pathania as also his supporters were ignored and not given any importance which prompted them to raise slogans in favour of Azad. This was countered by the supporters of Soz group already present in the office which raised the pitch of 'factionalism' for quite some time. One more loyalist of Azad faction Vaqar Banihali, national general secretary of IYC, who according to sources had come, did not enter the office premises and left from outside upon learning about the 'sloganeering tamasha'. Newly nominated president of PYC Shoaib Lone, who was given grand reception two days back at the PCC headquarters, arrived quite late in the function today. It may be mentioned that Pathania had not attended the function that was organized to accord welcome to Lone for assuming his new post. What some genuine leaders of Congress, not affiliated with any group are worried is the fact that factionalism has now started showing its 'tentacles' at the level of Youth Congress leadership, which in any case does not augur well for the party, nor are in line with the strict instructions given by the High Command, Rahul Gandhi in particular, who wants all cadres and leaders should work in one direction. " Both Azad and Soz sahib are responsible for this……because overtly or covertly both these stalwarts are encouraging the people down the hierarchy to remain divided so as to show their strength and grip over the party matters", said a senior Congress leader, adding this trend has surely brought more confusions and conflicts within the party. |
