Leh will take years to rebuild again | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 9: The devastation created by recent cloud burst and flash floods that lashed the Leh town in Ladakh region during night of 5 and 6 will take years together to rebuild the township and its surrounding villages again who are completely in rubble at present. The authorities who have started the relief and rescue operations on war footing basis with army, paramilitary forces and various NGOs joining them in relief and rehabilitation measures the, authorities say that it will take years together to rebuild the Leh and the devastated villages to the position which it was before the cloud burst of August 5. Though various State and Central Government ministers are camping in the region and monitoring the relief operations themselves, they feel perturbed how to rebuild the Leh township again. The main problem faced by the authorities is the hostile weather conditions in Himalayan region where the working season is left for only one and a half month . After the fall in day temperature with the beginning of October it will be very difficult to go ahead with construction works in the tough weather conditions. Moreover it is also not feasible as per the engineering point of view to continue the construction work in sub zero temperature. Under these circumstances rebuilding the Ladakh to its original position will take years together. This has been admitted by both Central and state government ministers camping in Ladakh at present. They also admit that the huge devastation caused to Leh township and its surrounding villages has given a setback to tourism industry in the region. As every thing lies in shambles and rubble no foreign tourist will like to visit the region for the time being. However hoping against the hope the authorities have guard up their lions to over come all the challenges boldly and lick the scars of Ladakhis created due to this vast devastation. The immediate task before the authorities is to provide relief and rescue operations to the also an affected families clear the debris and bring out the dead bodies. However it is not an easy task and will take a lot of time in bringing out all the bodies buried under debris. At various places the authorities engaged in relief and rescue operations say that there is 20 to 25 feet debris and it will take a lot of time in removing the same and locate the dead bodies. However they Government is on the job and all efforts are on to clear the debris as early as possible. The main loss has occurred to the Kaccha houses which have been constructed mud and stones. They have been completely washed away by the flash floods. As Ladkah was experiencing very less rain fall people in the region used to construct the Kaccha houses of mud and stones which were cheaper than the concrete houses. However with this devastation and flood furry facing the region for last some years the authorities are also thinking of replacing the old concept of construction in the region with new one which can at least be to some extent resistant to heavy rains or flash floods. Another problem which the authorities will be facing in rebuilding the Leh township and other damaged villages is shortage of labour as thousands of laborers from Bihar and UP are leaving the region after their colleagues were killed in the recent cloud burst and flash floods. |
