EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 10: This is height of political debauchery. This is height of rank opportunism. Don’t say it has lost its way. It has not lost its way. Actually, it has become C-team of the ruling National Conference. It is party that has developed the habit of hoodwinking and misleading the people of Jammu. No, it has developed the habit of taking the people of Jammu for a ride and compromising and bartering their interests in order to remain on the right side of the ruling elite so that its leaders could promote their vested interests.
Only the day before yesterday, the BJP leaders with much fanfare declared that they would boycott the all-party meeting to be held by the Prime Minister in New Delhi today at 6 P.M to discuss the Kashmir situation. They had taken this decision on the spurious plea that they had decided to boycott the scheduled meeting because they received invitation from the State’s Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister. It was not at all a valid ground for rejecting the offer, but they did do, notwithstanding the fact that the Prime Minister’s office operates through the state government in such cases.
Even otherwise, the so-called BJP leaders didn’t have the moral right to think in terms of boycotting the meeting to be held by the Prime Minister. For, on July 12, the BJP leaders, including the party president, had not only taken part in the “all-party” meeting held by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at Srinagar, but had also become a party to the resolution that sought to reopen the settled issue of Jammu and Kashmir and urged the Union Government to accelerate the so-called peace process with Pakistan, but also joined the press conference, which was addressed by the Chief Minister after the end of the all-party meeting – press conference where the president of the BJP was struggling hard to show his face to the press persons to register his presence.
The BJP didn’t have the moral right to think in terms of boycotting the Prime Minister’s sponsored meeting because after returning from Srinagar, the BJP state president had held a press conference to express his party’s solidarity with the ruling National Conference. In fact, the BJP president organized the press conference to offer his party’s unqualified support to the National Conference coalition government.
Anyway, the BJP had, as mentioned earlier, publicly declared that it would not participate in the all-party meeting. It is obvious that the state unit of the BJP had taken this decision at the behest of the national BJP leaders, including Arun Jaitely, who had only the other day asked the Union Home Minister not to give any concession to Kashmir at this juncture. What meaning of what Jaitely told the Rajya Sabha was clear and the meaning was that the Union Government should wait for some more time.
The BJP leaders have gone back on their declaration. They, including the party president, have taken a complete U-turn and taken part in the all-party meeting. Two local BJP leaders took part in the meeting.
What happened in between that made the BJP leaders to take this U-turn? Insiders reveal that It was the National Conference president and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah who persuaded the BJP national leaders, including Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, to direct the state BJP leaders to air dash to New Delhi to take part in the all-party meeting. Insiders also reveal that Union Home Minister had also intervened. This might be true, but it was basically the National Conference president who played the crucial role.
The manner in which the BJP has taken this complete U-turn should serve to vindicate the Panthers Party’s public stand that the BJP is nothing but the “C-team of the National Conference” and that it is “someone from the National conference who has been preparing press statements for the BJP.” It’s no wonder then that the BJP leaders have become a laughing stock and an object of ridicule and contempt.
It appears the BJP high command has decided to close down its shop in Jammu and Kashmir in order to enable the National Conference and similar other Kashmir-based outfits to obtain from India autonomy, if not complete independence, as a first step. All its so-called anti-autonomy propaganda or anti-Article 370 propaganda is an exercise aimed at befooling the people of Jammu province in particular. But the people of Jammu are not that fool. They know what the BJP is and what it stands for. They also now the extent to which the BJP damaged Jammu by making common cause with the National Conference on the delimitation issue.
