‘Ideology’ clash leads to scuffle on JU campus
8/10/2010 11:31:33 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 10: Panic gripped the Jammu University campus after two groups indulged in a scuffle over ‘ideological’ differences as the students alleged that the ‘outsiders’, were promoting Naxalism on varsity campus.
The clash, between the students and outsiders which broke out near Gossip Corner Cafetaria, left four students sustaining minor injuries.
The trouble started when a group of ‘outsiders’ including girls and an Italian tourist were having snacks in the varsity cafeteria and a group of university students including a student from MAM PG College reached the cafeteria to discuss the situation arisen out of a protest by some youth outside the university wherein they aired pro-freedom slogans.
One of the students accompanying group of University students allegedly started to shoot video clips of the ‘outsiders’ which was strongly objected by them.
“Initially we all ignored the action of the student but when we raised objections, all others accompanying him attacked us and gave us a severe thrashing,” one of ‘outsider’ said, adding “Two of our group members have received injuries in the incident.”
Official sources said that Police have registered an FIR under section 107/151 Cr PC against two persons including a scholar of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) allegedly for creating nuisance on campus. Both the persons, however, were bailed out later in the evening.
The students of Jammu University however countered the allegations saying, “We had organised a meeting to discuss the pro-freedom slogans raised by some persons outside the varsity campus. As one of the students making a call from his mobile, he was assaulted by an outsider, Surohi Nandan, who is running an NGO.
The student who was attacked was only talking on his phone and not taking video shots of the group,” alleged Rakesh Chib, president Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association (JURSEA).
“The JNU scholar, Vensessa Chisti, who was one of them, also joined Surohi Nandan and gave severe blow to the student,” the students alleged.
Mohammad Bilal Azhar, in charge Nehru police post rushed to the spot and picked up two outsiders from the campus and took them to the Police Station Gandhi Nagar.
The students also alleged that the ‘outsiders’ were promoting “naxalism” in Jammu and they had opted the cafeteria to hold discussion on it.
The agitating students also rushed to the Gandhi Nagar Police Station and demanded action against the ‘outsiders’ who allegedly assaulted the students including a student from MAM Post Graduate College.
Police however, registered a complaint against two persons after written complaint by two students Varinder Singh Chib and Ram Ji. They however, managed to get a bail from Tehsildar Jammu.
The groups of ‘outsiders’ however, raised a question mark on the role of Police, saying “Police officers worked under the influence of some miscreants active on campus.”
