| Sham for expediting flood protection works | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 13: Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Mr Sham Lal Sharma today conducted an extensive tour of flood prone areas of Akhnoor constituency and took stock of the losses due to recent rains and floods.
Sub Divisional Magistrate, Akhnoor, Tehsildar Akhnoor, engineers of Irrigation and Flood Control department and senior officers of various departments also accompanied the Minister.
Mr Sharma inspected ongoing flood protection works at village Sangrampur, (Devipur), Mera, Sitriwala and directed the concerned authorities to speed up the pace of work by increasing the workforce to save the fertile land from fury of river Chenab. Due to increased water level in river Chenab some agriculture land has been washed away in various area. He asked for digging deep drains to channelize the extra water in monsoon season in irrigated areas so that the crops can be saved from inundation.
The Minister also enjoined upon the rural development functionaries to take up flood protection works like crates, spurs and bunds under various central and state schemes, so that the fertile land can be saved from erosion.
Mr Sharma also interacted with the affected people and directed the concerned officers to assess the losses to the agriculture land which was washed away and recommend their cases for assistance under various schemes.
