Panun Kashmir Seminar: Jammu makes sense of happenings in Kashmir | | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 13: On August 8, Panun Kashmir (PK), a premier organization of the displaced Kashmiri Hindus organized a seminar in Jammu. The theme of the seminar was “Making sense of what is happening in Kashmir.” It was organized at a time when the Kashmiri separatists had heightened their anti-India activities and started persecuting the left over poor and unprotected handful of Sikhs. It was a timely and the much-needed intervention in the sense that there were reports that the Government of India might buckle under the pressure of Islamic radicals and might announce some major concessions to the fundamentalists leading up to the virtual secession of Jammu and Kashmir from India. What perhaps had motivated the concerned PK leadership to intervene and put things in perspective was the fear that the Government of India, which had utterly failed to grasp the nature of the problem the nation had been facing in Kashmir and bungled at regular intervals, might seal their fate for all the times to come and force them to suffer persecution and humiliation at the hands of the Islamic radical groups in Kashmir, all enjoying the unqualified support of the National Conference, the People’s Democratic Party, the Left parties and a section of Delhi-based opinion-makers and media persons masquerading as “peace-mongers”, “secularists”, “conflict-managers”, “trouble-shooters”; “genuine democrats”; and so on. People know who these “opinion-makers” are. The fear of the PK leadership, like others in Jammu and Ladakh, was not misplaced. The fear was well-founded. Their view that the Government of India might yield and accord legitimacy to the ongoing communal and secessionist movement in the Valley stood vindicated only two days later, when the Prime Minister, instead of rejecting the demand of greater autonomy or demand that seeks withdrawal of everything Indian, including all the Central laws and institutions, from the Islamic terrorist-infested Kashmir, announced that the “demand could be considered.” That was the fear of the PK and similar other organizations operating in Jammu and Delhi and the fear came true. Anyway, the alert PK leadership took a very substantial step by intervening in the situation through those exposing since years the true nature of the movement in Kashmir and its dangerous ramifications. The auditorium of the Jammu Club, where the seminar was held, was, according to eyewitnesses, packed to its capacity. Those who intervened and reflected on the situation as it had been existing in the Valley since years, as also on the policy of the Government of India towards the communal and secessionist movement, included political analyst and former Head of Political Science Department, Kashmir University, Prof M K Teng; keen Kashmir-watcher and former Director General of Police M M Khajuria, former Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences and Member of Indian Council of Historical Research Prof Hari Om; and chairman of PK, Dr Ajay Chrungoo. What each one of them said was to the point and based on the ground realities. Each one of them laid bare the disparities between the falsehood that is being preached in Kashmir and in Delhi by the Kashmiri separatists and the so-called mainstream Kashmiri politicians and their paid agents in Delhi and the ground realities in Kashmir. They emphasized the need for a policy that could restore peace in the Valley by taking on the secessionists and communalists of all hues, protect and advance the national interests in Kashmir, secure the strategic Northern Frontiers (the lifeline of India) and defeat the Pakistani designs at any cost. It would be only appropriate if what the speakers said in the seminar is reproduced here. Such an exercise is necessary. Prof M K Teng, who has written extensively on the political and constitutional history of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Indian political system, Article 370 and Northern Frontiers of India, among other very significant things, said: “Muslim separatism is destructive of the unity of India and of the secular character of its social and political organization” and warned that “whichever variant of this ideology confronts the polity, whether the demand for secession of Jammu and Kashmir from India, or the creation of a separate Muslim sphere of power through demands of Greater Autonomy or Self-Rule, it aims to destroy Indian Unity and to wreak Indian sovereignty.” “Any compromise”, he asserted, “which places Jammu and Kashmir half way from India will lead straight to another partition of India” that “it is time we all realized that concessions to Muslim separatism will lead to balkanization of India."
