Separatists, militants plan to register presence on I-Day | | | Early Times Report Jammu,Aug 13: The security grid in the entire Kashmir valley and in some parts of the Jammu region has been further upgraded with the deployment of additional companies of security forces in view of the Independence Day of Pakistan, that falls on Saturday, and India's Independence Day on Sunday. Senior police functionaries said that the security grid had to be upgraded following the plan of the separatists to make a show while trying to celebrate the Independence Day of Pakistan and while observing complete shutdown in the valley on the suggestions given by the JKLF A JKLF spokesman said that it has given a call for complete shutdown on Sunday for ending a message to th world that the Jammu and Kashmir was a disputed territory that required immediate settlement.Since the JKLF is opposed to Kashmir's incorporation with P:akistan and is in favour of an independent stat us for the state it has not issued any instruction to people to celebrate Pakistan's independence day on Saturday.Howevr, the pro-Pak forces besides the militants have drawn up a plan to celebrate Saturday's event and hold black flag demonstrations in order to manifest their pro-Pak feelings. Police souces said that attempts may be made to hoist Pakistani flags on rooftops and on shops and electric poles on Sat urday and black flags on Sunday. This drill has been carried out by the supporters of separatists.Groups of militants have,in the past, held ceremonial parades on August 14 where the leader of each group presided over functions held for displaying their physical and weaponary power. It has been a regular drill for the men of the police and the paramilitary forces to remove the Pakistani flags and the black flags hoisted on August 15.On occasions groups of youth have moved stealthy from vicinity to vicinity for hoisting Pakistani flags on housetops, shops and electric poles on August 14 and black flags on August 15 to the amazement and discomfiture of the security forces.Despite nocturnal patrolling by the security forcs groups of youth would mnanage to make a show of their pro-Pak and anti-India feelings by resorting to the flag war. During the last over 21 years the security forces had succeeded in preventing youths from organising marches in favour of August 14 and against August 15 events but had preferred to adopt a passive role against those militants who would organise pro-Pak and anti-India functions in the upper r eaches and for est belt s,which have remained their usual hideouts.Since militants organised these functions on August 14 and August 15 to demonstrate their weapon power the security forces did not want to trigger violence by throwing a challenge to the groups of rf ebels equipped with sophisticated weapons. A senior police officer said that such shows had become part of the ongoing campaign launched by the separatists and the militants against the Government.Such activities,he added, had had no major impact on the political, security and geographical scenario in Jammu and Kashmir. He said whenever militants, separatists and their supporters feel helpless before the establishment in Srinagar they bank on armed attacks on the soft targets and on civilian strife and unrest. He claimed that majority of people in Kashmir have realised the futility of the exercise being carried by the militants and by the separatists. He claimed that if the sparatists and militants stop issuing threats to common people their calls for hartal and street protests would not evoke any response from the people.
